Gavin Hunt said he was surprised at the sprightly performance that his side put up against AmaZulu on Friday, producing multiple turnovers and scoring as they pressed their visitors with precision to win 1-0 at the Danie Craven Stadium.
It was the first time this season that Stellenbosch had produced back-to-back victories and after also beating Kaizer Chiefs away on Tuesday, they have soared within a week from 14th place to ninth in the Betway Premiership standings.
“We played so many games the last couple of weeks so, I was expecting a bit of a downturn off after Tuesday, but I thought the first half we were good,” said Hunt.
“We started really bright and fresh, and we looked good. I said to the players, ‘you know, they'll certainly have a little bit more impetus about them in the second half’, which they did, but we still had some good opportunities to kill the game off, which we didn't do, which was a bit frustrating because in the last five minutes it gets a little bit Helter skelter, you know?
“But, to win, to get ourselves out of the relegation fight, is good and now we’ve just got to keep going now and try and get to 30 points as quick as we can.”
Stellenbosch have 22 points from 18 games and are next in action on Tuesday away against Siwelele in Bloemfontein.
“I think let's just get to the next game. We got another tough away game on Tuesday, so the next game is most important game,” Hunt added.
