Kaizer Chiefs’ hopes of building some winning momentum in the Betway Premiership were stymied on Saturday afternoon when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Polokwane City at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium.
The Amakhosi looked on course to claim a second successive league win when Lebohang Maboe put them ahead in the first half, but Rise and Shine struck back thanks to a goalkeeping error from Brandon Petersen in the second half to earn a share of the spoils.
The result sees Chiefs drop to fourth place (with AmaZulu FC leapfrogging them thanks to a concurrent win over Marumo Gallants), while Polokwane are up to seventh place.

Polokwane started strongly and enjoyed the better chances in the opening quarter, including successive goal-bound headers from Ndamulelo Maphangule and Keorapetse Sebone in the 20th minute, both of which were well saved by Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen.
The visitors then claimed the lead with a superbly-executed goal in the 29th minute.
Lebohang Maboe timed a run perfectly to meet Pule Mmodi’s cross into the penalty area, controlled the ball effortlessly and in the same motion directed it beyond the reach of Polokwane goalkeeper Oscarine Masuluke for a 1-0 advantage.

That goal inspired Chiefs to dominate the remainder of the first half, though the interval arrived with the score still just one goal in favour of the team from Soweto.
The Amakhosi were close to extending their lead five minutes after the restart, with Etiosa Ighodaro arrowing a low shot toward the bottom corner of the net, but Masuluke made an excellent save to keep his side in the game.
And his efforts were not in vain, with Rise and Shine scoring an equaliser in the 73rd minute. Giovanni Philander’s in-swinging corner kick from the left flank found its way beyond the goal line after a howler from Petersen at his near post, 1-1.

Chiefs substitute Faiz Abrahams looked to restore the away team’s lead in the 88th minute when he attempted an acrobatic volley, but his effort flashed wide of the mark – leaving the game to close out in a 1-1 draw.
The teams will return to Premiership action next weekend, with Polokwane hosting AmaZulu FC and Kaizer Chiefs away to Golden Arrows.
