The title race in the DStv Diski Challenge is shaping up to be a thrilling contest that promises to go down to the wire. Both Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns continue to demonstrate their exceptional form, preparing to battle until the very end.
This past weekend, both clubs showcased their offensive prowess, sending a strong message with impressive victories. Pirates delivered a stunning 5-0 triumph over Siwelele FC, while Sundowns matched that intensity with a commanding 6-1 win against Orbit College. Their free-scoring displays have left fans on the edge of their seats, eagerly awaiting each match. With the stakes higher than ever, it is evident that this fierce competition for the title is far from over, making every goal a vital contribution in the coming weeks.
Orlando Pirates 5-0 Siwelele FC
Mpho Padime, Seth Green, Samukele Zikalala, and Lebo Mohlala all found the back of the net, with one goal coming from an unfortunate own goal, allowing Pirates to solidify their standing at the top of the DDC table. After 22 matches, they lead the standings with 51 points. While the result proved a setback for Siwelele in their own title ambitions, their hopes remain mathematically viable, albeit contingent on slips from both Downs and Pirates.
Orbit College 1-6 Mamelodi Sundowns
With their resounding 6-1 victory over Orbit College, Sundowns levelled their points with Orlando Pirates, now sitting with the same 51 points, but having played one match more. Striker Bennet Mokoena emerged as the standout performer, netting a hat-trick that elevates his season total to 19 goals. If he continues at this pace, Mokoena is poised to break the DDC top scorer record set by Boitumelo Radiopane of Orlando Pirates, who scored 25 goals in the 2021/22 season. The other goals for Sundowns came from Siyabonga Mabena, Kutlwano Letlhaku, and Gomolemo Kekana.
Golden Arrows 1-1 Kaizer Chiefs
It has become increasingly clear that Amakhosi’s chances of defending their DDC title are dwindling. Their weekend result underscores this reality as they were held to a disappointing one-all draw by two-time champions Golden Arrows. Arrows struck first with a goal from Siphamandla Shangase, but Chiefs managed to secure a point thanks to an equaliser from Imaad Hendricks.
