Switzerland will square off with Colombia in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match scheduled for Tuesday at BC Place in Vancouver, Canada.
Kick-off is at 10:00pm CAT.
CURRENT FORM
Switzerland will enter this encounter in strong form after progressing from their group unbeaten before securing a solid 2-0 victory over Algeria in the Round of 32 on Friday.
They have displayed tactical discipline and defensive solidity throughout the tournament so far and they will need to maintain that level to overcome Colombia and advance to the quarterfinals, aiming to match or surpass their best-ever finish of reaching the last eight (1934, 1938 and 1954).
Colombia, meanwhile, also remain undefeated, having topped their group before grinding out a narrow 1-0 win over Ghana in the Round of 32 on Saturday.
Known for their fiery passion, Los Cafeteros will bring their emotional, intense, and attacking style as they target a place in the quarterfinals, aiming to equal their historic best performance (last eight) from the 2014 tournament in Brazil.
TEAM NEWS
Switzerland are expected to have a nearly full squad available, with Granit Xhaka among the players who avoided tournament-altering bookings and are fully available.
Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye are key attacking options in fine form, while the midfield and defence, anchored by experienced players like Xhaka, remain intact and reliable.
Colombia, on the other hand, have been dealt a blow: medical tests confirmed Jhon Córdoba's injury is severe, ruling him out for the remainder of the 2026 World Cup.
However, the South Americans still have Luis Diaz, who provides pace and creativity on the wing, alongside players like James Rodríguez and Luis Suarez.
The winner between Switzerland and Colombia will take on either Egypt or Argentina in the quarterfinals on July 11.
WHAT WAS SAID?
Switzerland head coach Murat Yakin
“We followed the Colombia against Ghana match very closely and we are pleased that our next opponent is now defined. Colombia is a team with a lot of footballing quality," Yakin said.
"They are technically strong, they have fast and creative attacking players, and they can be dangerous at any moment thanks to their intensity.
“There are no easy opponents. Everything has to work out perfectly for us, tactically, football-wise, and the intensity has to be there as well, every single detail.”
Colombia head coach Néstor Lorenzo
“After creating several chances and not converting, I liked how we defended. I value the fact that we did not suffer much, apart from the opponent (Ghana)’s clear chances," Lorenzo said.
“They [Switzerland] have order, but also good players from midfield forward. They play very well. It is going to be very tough.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Johan Manzambi. Switzerland: The SC Freiburg attacking midfielder has been one of Nati's standout performers in this tournament, registering three goals and two assists in four matches.
Manzambi can unsettle Colombia’s compact defence with his explosive pace, direct dribbling and clever movement, while punishing any errors with sharp finishing and decisive chances.
Luis Díaz, Colombia: The Bayern Munich winger has been a constant danger to the opposition in this tournament and had a goal disallowed against Ghana.
Diaz can terrorise Switzerland’s organised defence with his explosive runs, sharp changes of direction, and ability to beat markers in 1v1 situations, while being a direct goal threat.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
The two teams have met seven times in all competitions, with Colombia winning four, Switzerland two, and one draw.
Their last meeting was a friendly on March 28, 2026, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, which Colombia won 3-1.
It serves as the immediate precursor to their highly anticipated Round of 16 clash at the 2026 World Cup.
