As Stellenbosch FC DStv Diski Challenge season approaches its final stretch, coach Evangelos Vellios finds himself at a crossroads, pondering the remarkable highs and crushing lows that have defined the campaign.
Once brimming with the promise of a championship title, his team now stands on the outskirts of contention, trailing behind the leaders with just seven matches remaining. In a candid assessment, Vellios reflects on the pivotal moments that undermined their aspirations and lays out an ambitious plan to finish the season on a hopeful note, igniting a renewed spirit within the squad.
“Looking back on our season, it’s evident that our title aspirations faltered due to a mix of untimely injuries,” Vellios shared softly, a hint of the season's weight lingering in his voice.
The team has faced significant challenges, principally the long-term absences of key players which included captain Simthandile Sishi, solid as rock defender Vuyolwethu Andrieas, midfield maestro Kyle Bailey, and goal-scoring ace Quwan Platjies.
“We were on a nice winning streak, having claimed five victories in a row. We felt we had finally built the momentum that defines us, but the passing of Jeandre Gaffor hit the team hard.
"He was having a good season and was the heartbeat of our squad. Since then, it’s been five matches, three points (collected) and I fear that marks the end of our championship ambitions.”
Vellios is realistic about the team’s fate, acknowledging, “I thought our season ended at the end of January. Having claimed the Diski Challenge title twice, we recognise what true momentum looks like. We are out of the title race, but our focus now shifts to ensuring our young players grow accustomed to competitive play. I believe finishing in the top four is a realistic goal for us.”
As Stellies prepare for their next challenge, a crucial home match against Chippa United at Idas Valley Stadium, Vellios remains cautious. Despite Chippa occupying the bottom of the league standings, he warns, “We will not underestimate them.”
Entering the match, Stellies currently sit in fourth place with 37 points, they trail log leaders Orlando Pirates by a daunting 17 points.
The question looms: Can they muster the resilience to finish the season strong, or will this campaign be remembered solely for its heartbreak?
