Stellenbosch debutant Quwan Plaatjies set a new landmark for South African football by becoming the first player to score a hat-trick on his debut, netting all his club’s goals in the 3-1 victory over Marumo Gallants at Athlone Stadium in Cape Town on Friday night.
The 20-year-old had never played top-flight football previously, having come through the club’s DStv Diski Challenge teams, but was thrust into the side by coach Gavin Hunt and had scored twice before halftime before rounding off his hat-trick in the 54th minute.

“He's not a striker, this boy, he's a goal scorer. Now there's a big difference for me,” enthused Hunt after the match.
“He is like... if I'm going to say this it’ll be all over the media …. like Mark Williams. The build-ups, you don't get him involved, but he can score goals. I saw him in pre-season. I thought, ‘my God’, you know? And the name, when I saw his name as well, I mean, I hope he's not a road runner!” added Hunt in reference to South African athlete Mark Plaatjies, who later ran for the US at the World Championships in 1993.
NATURAL GOALSCORER
“He's a natural goalscorer, and that's hard to find. And there's a difference between a striker and a goalscorer. The striker holds it up, and you can run, and, you know, you press, and this guy scores goals. In training, he scores goals every day, and in the pre-season, he was scoring goals. And I thought, ‘Yeah, tonight's the night at home’. You know, I wouldn't have played in our first two away games; it was a bit early for that.”
Plaatjies’ first goal was a composed finish from the edge of the box, before two headers from pinpoint crosses by fellow academy product Raoul Daniels sealed his history-making milestone.
Plaatjies was part of the Stellenbosch side that won the 2023-24 DStv Diski Challenge and travelled to England for the 2024 Premier League Next Generation Cup.
He scored a superb winner against Aston Villa as Stellies went on to win the tournament, beating Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in the final.
His mother passed away when he was young, and he dedicated his treble against Gallants to her.
Plaatjies became the 134th player to net a treble, or more, in the PSL era. In all, there have been 191 hat-tricks scored since the start of the 1996-97 season, with at least one in every campaign bar 2017-18, when there were none.
In the 1998-99 season, when Sundowns pipped Kaizer Chiefs to the title, a record 15 hat-tricks were scored.
Pollen Ndlanya leads the individual list with six hat-tricks. Four of them were scored for Chiefs and one each during his brief tenures at AmaZulu and Pirates.
The fastest hat-trick in South African football remains the five minutes it took James Chamanga to score three times between the 20th and 25th minutes for Swallows against Platinum Stars in December 2007. He went on to add two more late in the game for a five-goal haul.
