Mamelodi Sundowns will find out the identity of their next African Champions League opponents as early as Tuesday when the draw for the knockout rounds of the competition is conducted in Cairo.
Sundowns qualified for the quarterfinals for the eighth successive season with a 2-0 win over Algeria’s Mouloudia Alger in Pretoria on Saturday to finish second behind Al Hilal of Sudan in Group C.
Sundowns will go into pot two for the draw, which will be held in Cairo at 1pm on Tuesday, and will therefore take on either the Egyptian duo of Al Ahly or Pyramids or the surprise package Stade Malien from Mali.
Sundowns lost to Pyramids in last year’s final.
The draw will pit the group winners against runners-up.
The other teams in the same pot with Sundowns will be the Moroccan duo of Renaissance Berkane and Royal Armed Forces as well as Esperance from Tunisia.
The draw will also determine the semifinal combinations and who will play at home in the first leg of the two-legged final.
The last eight pairings for the African Confederation Cup will also be determined at the draw, but there is no longer any South African interest after both Kaizer Chiefs and Stellenbosch failed to make it past the group phase.
