Stellenbosch striker Wonder Makhubu is the first player to be sent off twice this season and will miss his club’s next three matches as a result.
Makhubu was given a straight red card near the end of Saturday’s 2-1 win over Chippa United at the Athlone Stadium in the Betway Premiership, only nine minutes after coming on as a substitute.
“He was a bit late. What do you call it? It's a striker's tackle, isn't it? They're bad tacklers. He caught the opponent because he just sat out two matches then came back and now misses again. It's unfortunate,” said coach Gavin Hunt.
The 29-year-old striker, who only joined Stellenbosch in the January transfer window, was also dismissed on February 18 for a dangerous studs-up high tackle on Magesi defender Tshepo Makgoga in the second half of the 1-1 draw at the Danie Craven Stadium.
There have been a total of 15 red cards in the Betway Premiership this season, two in the Carling Knockout and a further three for players from top-flight clubs in the Nedbank Cup.
Stellenbosch are the worst offenders with a red card tally of five this season, two more than TS Galaxy (3) and three more than Lamontville Golden Arrows, Mamelodi Sundowns and Polokwane City.
A further six clubs have seen one player sent off this season while Chippa United, Kaizer Chiefs, Orbit College, Orlando Pirates and Richards Bay have not yet been shown any red cards in this campaign.
