In a remarkable display of talent, Golden Arrows winger Kwandile “Diego” Gumede has expressed his determination to break the DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) scoring record. The young dynamo recently joined players in the league folklore by scoring five goals in a single match, a feat he achieved during Arrows' stunning 9-2 victory over Chippa United in early October.
With that stellar performance, Diego joined the ranks of notable scorers like Mervin Boji, who netted five goals for Stellenbosch FC against Kaizer Chiefs in April 2023, and Cheswyn Philander, who accomplished the same against Chippa in a 9-1 rout in March of the previous year. Not to be overlooked is Ntlonelo Bomelo, who also marked his name in the record books with five goals for Richards Bay against Polokwane City in November 2023.
Reflecting on his achievement, Diego made it clear he is not content with merely being a one-hit wonder. He is now focused on chasing the DDC record, provided he remains with the team for the season. “I started the season well, scoring six goals in just two matches,” he said, eyes set on the record. “Now the goal is to chase the DDC record.”
Currently, the record stands at 24 goals, a benchmark set by Orlando Pirates striker Boitumelo “Radioman” Radiopane during the 2021/22 season. Presently, Diego is a joint top scorer with Neo Bohloko from Kaizer Chiefs, each having found the back of the net six times this season.
“I aspire to win the Diski Challenge Golden Boot,” Diego continued. “It won’t be easy, especially not knowing if I’ll wrap up the season in the DDC. But I will give my all to score in every game I play.”
He added, “However, if I get promoted to the first team, that would also be an achievement. My goal is to set a new record, over 24 goals this season.”
Last season, Gumede managed to score seven times in 15 matches, and he is tantalisingly close to matching that tally already. He believes his contributions on the field will significantly improve Golden Arrows' chances of securing the league title.
The club has a proud history in the Diski Challenge, having claimed the championship in both the 2015/16 and 2017/18 seasons.
This Saturday, Diego and his teammates will host TS Galaxy at Chatsworth Stadium at 10am, with hopes of clinching all three points to further their title aspirations.
