Relebohile Mofokeng’s impressive start to his new career at Belgian club Union Saint Gilloise continued on Thursday night with the opening goal as they won 3-0 away at Viktoria Plzen in the Czech Republic in their opening Europa League group tie.
Mofokeng got the winning performance underway after 17 minutes. A long ball from Senegalese Massire Sylla was poorly judged by the shaky Czech defence and sent Mofokeng through on goal. The striker made no mistake, putting Union ahead.
It was Mofokeng’s fourth goal for his new club since his arrival from Orlando Pirates.
Union had to cope with several absences in the Czech Republic, yet once again they ruthlessly brushed their opponents aside with two more goals after halftime.
With the points safely secured, Union eased off in the closing stages to conserve some energy ahead of their upcoming league clash against Antwerp, with Mofokeng among the key starters taken off for a rest.
Also in the group stage of the Europa League, ex-Bafana Bafana international Mihlali Mayambela made a late substitute appearance for his Cypriot club, Omonia Nicosia, as they upset Spanish LaLiga outfit Celta Vigo.
