Zamalek, USM Alger and Mamelodi Sundowns were among the continental giants who progressed to the semifinals of the CAF inter-club competitions on Sunday.
In the Confederation Cup, Zamalek kept their hopes alive as the only remaining Egyptian side in continental action, advancing past Otoho d'Oyo after other Egyptian teams, Al Ahly, Pyramids, and Al Masry were eliminated.
Following a 1-1 first-leg draw away, the Egyptian giants secured a 2-1 home victory in the return leg, progressing 3-2 on aggregate to the last four.
However, there was a notable upset and tight battle elsewhere in the competition.
In an all-Moroccan clash, Olympique de Safi stunned Wydad Casablanca by advancing on the away goals rule after the tie finished 3-3 on aggregate.
The teams drew 1-1 in the first leg and 2-2 in the second leg at Wydad's home ground.
In Algeria, USM Alger advanced to the last four by beating Maniema Union 1-0 at home in the second leg, progressing on the away goals rule after the tie finished 2-2 on aggregate.
Therefore, Alger will now square off with Olympique de Safi in the semifinals next month, while Zamalek lock horns with CR Belouizdad of Algeria.
Moroccan clubs maintained their strong continental presence.
In the Champions League, RS Berkane joined AS FAR Rabat in the semifinals by defeating Al Hilal Omdurman 1-0 in the second leg (2-1 aggregate).
Meanwhile, Sundowns suffered a 2-0 defeat to Stade Malien in Mali, but they advanced after winning the tie 3-2 on aggregate thanks to their 3-0 first-leg advantage.
As a result, Sundowns will take on Tunisian football powerhouse, Esperance de Tunis, in the semifinals next month, while Berkane and AS FAR meet in an all-Moroccan tie.
