Former Mamelodi Sundowns captain Ernest ‘Chirwali’ Mtawali has been handed probably his toughest job in his coaching career.
The Masandawana great has been hired as head coach for Malawi’s relegation-threatened Creck Sporting Club (Creck SC).
The 1985 South Africa Player of the Year was appointed on Thursday on a two-year contract.
In a statement, the FDH Bank Premiership team confirmed Mtawali's appointment.
“Creck Sporting Club can confirm that Ernest Chirwali Mtawali has agreed to join the club on a two-year deal and becomes our new head coach,” reads the statement.
Mtawali, who was known as Chirwali in the early days of his career during apartheid, was a top midfielder for Sundowns in the 1990s.
He also played for Bloemfontein Celtic, SuperSport United, Orlando Pirates, Hellenic FC and Ajax Cape Town.
CRECK SPORTING CLUB LIMPING
The 59-year-old inherits Creck SC lying third from the bottom of the 16-member FDH Bank Premiership table.
The Lilongwe outfit has registered one win in six league matches, a poor run of form that led to the sacking of Mtawali's predecessor Eliya Kananji, earlier this week.
