Downs rise to the top, Chiefs topple Siwelele

With the Betway Premiership slowly taking shape, Mamelodi Sundowns moved to the top of the standings this weekend, while Kaizer Chiefs claimed a vital win over Siwelele

Given Orlando Pirates' duties in the CAF Champions League, Sundowns had the opportunity to climb to the top of the Betway Premiership standings and did so following a 2-1 win over Golden Arrows at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Durban on Sunday.

Led by goals from Siyanda Ndlovu and Teboho Mokoena, Downs claimed their fourth straight league win and now hold a three-point lead over Pirates at the top of the pile.

Elsewhere, AmaZulu returned to the winning column on Friday with a 2-1 win over Richards Bay.

Usuthu bounced back from their 5-2 loss against Mamelodi Sundowns and subsequently moved into fourth position, as Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya and Sibusiso Radebe scored at the Princess Magogo Stadium in KawMashu.

Fifth-placed Milford extended their winless streak in the league following a 0-0 draw with Chippa United on Saturday.

The result saw the PSL new boys reach eight points from five games, after recording a draw alongside Polokwane City and a defeat against Sundowns in their last two ties.

In another draw this weekend, Sekhukhune United and TS Galaxy shared the spoils in a 0-0 stalemate at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Saturday.

Sixth-placed Babina Noko are now without a win in their last two fixtures, after a 2-0 loss against Pirates in their league assignment last time out.

As for Galaxy, their inconsistent run of form continued; they recorded two draws and one win in their last three games, ending the weekend in eighth spot.

In the final game of the weekend, Kaizer Chiefs moved into third position on the log following a 3-2 win over Siwelele at the Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto on Sunday night.

Despite conceding twice, one of which was deep into stoppage time, strikes by Mfundo Vilakazi, Wandile Duba and Faiz Abrahams were enough for Chiefs to grab maximum points against the Bloemfontein side.
