A resounding scoreline for Algeria’s Chabab Belouizdad away over Stellenbosch in the African Confederation Cup on Sunday might have flattered the north African side, losing coach Gavin Hunt suggested after the 3-0 defeat.
Belouizdad did the double over Stellenbosch in group C of the competition, having beaten them 1-0 one week earlier in Algiers, and the North African side lead the standings with nine points while Stellenbosch dropped to the bottom with four.
“I thought we created some good opportunities, playing with good spirit, good intensity, I thought we didn’t play badly at all,” said Hunt, who has now lost two of the three games he has overseen since taking over from Steve Barker as Stellenbosch coach.
“They came into our half maybe three, four times, and scored three goals. It's disappointing from that perspective, but I thought we pushed, we played them on the front foot, we had their backs to the wall. We did everything. It was just the final ball,” he added.
“The score line is hard to take. Is it a true reflection? I don't know, and I don’t think so. But that's football, you have to take it and move on.
“I think it was good for a lot of the players to have a run out before the most important games coming up.”
Stellenbosch now meet Kaizer Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup at the Cape Town Stadium on Wednesday and then travel to Brazzaville for a must-win game against Otoho d’Oyo from Congo.
