With the countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup sharpening, Hugo Broos has doubled down on his belief that Panama are exactly the kind of opponent Bafana Bafana need right now.
South Africa will lock horns with the Central American side in back to back international friendlies, first at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday, 27 March, before the action shifts to DHL Stadium in Cape Town on Tuesday, 31 March 2026. Two games, two cities, one clear objective: fine tune Bafana before they step onto the world stage.
For Broos, this isn’t just another friendly window, it’s a litmus test.
“It was the right decision to choose Panama… We will learn a lot about the middle American style of playing football. The result is not that important, but I do not want two defeats or big defeats,” Broos explained, stressing the balance between experimenting and maintaining the identity Bafana built over the past three years.
The Belgian mentor was frank about the team losing their spark during the recent Africa Cup of Nations, and these fixtures are part of a deliberate reboot. A few selection tweaks reflect that intent, a reminder that places are never guaranteed, especially in a World Cup year.
Pretoria was abuzz early on Monday as Ime Okon and Renaldo Leaner reported for duty, while several foreign based stars were still en route. The Mamelodi Sundowns contingent, fresh off their CAF Champions League quarterfinal second leg against Stade Malien in Bamako, will link up with the squad once travel clears.
Meanwhile, Mbekezeli Mbokazi, Bongokuhle Hlongwane, Thapelo Maseko, and Samukele Kabini are expected between late Monday and early Tuesday.
