Few players embody the spirit of Leeds United quite like Lucas Radebe. Revered by supporters for his leadership on the pitch and his connection to the city away from it, the former Whites captain has now deepened that bond by becoming an official Ambassador for the Leeds United Foundation.
The South African icon, who made 260 appearances for Leeds during a distinguished playing career, has long been a familiar and welcome presence whenever he returns to Elland Road. Having already served as a club ambassador, Radebe has spent much of the past year supporting the Foundation’s community programmes, visiting schools and engaging with young people across the city.
His appointment formalises a commitment that has already been evident through his actions. Whether spending time with children in local schools or inspiring participants involved in community initiatives, Radebe has continued to demonstrate the humility, warmth and leadership qualities that made him such a respected figure during his playing days.
The Leeds United Foundation believes those qualities have had a profound impact. CEO Frances Milner praised Radebe’s ability to connect with people of all ages, highlighting the influence he has already had across the Foundation’s programmes. He joins a distinguished group of ambassadors that includes current Leeds captain Ethan Ampadu, club legends Eddie Gray and Tony Dorigo, and Bridie Hannon.
CHAMPION OF EQUALITY, INCLUSION & ANTI-RACISM INITIATIVES
For Radebe, giving back has always been about more than football. The former Bafana Bafana captain has built a reputation as a champion of equality, inclusion and anti-racism initiatives throughout his career. His efforts were recognised globally in 2000 when he received Fifa’s Fair Play Award, underlining a legacy that extends far beyond the game itself.
For a man affectionately known as “The Chief”, this latest role feels like a natural progression. Decades after first winning the hearts of Leeds supporters, Radebe continues to use his influence to make a difference where it matters most, strengthening the connection between club, community and the next generation.
Speaking last October on a school visit as part of the Premier League Primary Stars initiative alongside Gabriel Gudmundsson, Radebe reflected on the importance of acknowledging communities and supporters who have stood behind players through every step of their journey.
“I think we might take this for granted, because as footballers we always seem to be a bit greedy," he said. "But I think most of us as well, we do care about our communities, about our kids, and we do understand and appreciate the fans. And I think once we get the opportunity like this, that's when we can show the care, the love that we've had and as well, the opportunity to say thank you for the support for all these years. It's absolutely great for us to be able to do this kind of thing."
