Orlando Pirates' quest for a first Betway Premiership title since the 2011-12 season continues on Wednesday, as they tackle Polokwane City at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.
Kick-off is at 7:30pm CAT.
CURRENT FORM
The Buccaneers bounced back from two straight losses for the second time this season in emphatic fashion, beating neighbours Kaizer Chiefs 3-0 in the Soweto Derby.
Pirates reclaimed top spot in the Betway Premiership and are tied with Mamelodi Sundowns on 41 points, but are ahead by one goal on goal difference.
After falling to Sundowns and Casric Stars before the derby, Abdeslam Ouaddou’s men will look to keep their newfound momentum rolling forward as they attempt to dethrone the reigning champions.
Polokwane City also enter the fixture on the back of a commanding performance against their neighbour, having beaten Magesi 2-0 in the Polokwane Derby at the Seshego Stadium on Friday.
Rise and Shine sit in seventh place on the league standings with 28 points. They have managed seven wins, seven draws and four losses and are just four points behind third-placed Sekhukhune United.
A victory will bring them closer to contending for a spot in next season’s continental competitions.
WHAT WAS SAID
Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou believes his side’s big win at the weekend gives them a good platform to build on towards the end of the season.
“We won the first derby [of the season], and that was extremely important for the boys, and myself as the coach. It’s good for the fans; it gives the players trust and keeps them going,” said Ouaddou, speaking after his side’s win.
“I think we still have 13 games to play this season. So, we must build on that to be aggressive until the end of the season.”
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Polokwane City - Thabang Matuludi proved his value for the Orange Army on Friday. The team’s captain not only showcased his ability on defence but scored a goal of the season contender. He will look to lead his side to their second victory over the Bucs in league play.
Orlando Pirates - Tshepang Moremi has burst onto the scene in his first season for the Buccaneers. Having netted Pirates’ opener at the weekend, the winger has managed five goal contributions in the league and will be looking to add to his tally.
