Chiefs v Sundowns headlines the weekend’s Betway Premiership action

The heavyweight bout between Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns headlines the weekend’s Betway Premiership action, while champions Orlando Pirates will hope for a return to winning form when they take on Chippa United.

Chiefs and Sundowns will renew their rivalry with a meeting at the FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon, with the Amakhosi sitting proudly atop the log after back-to-back wins, while Sundowns want to build momentum after their dramatic, come-from-behind 3-2 win over TS Galaxy on Tuesday.

In both their MTN8 win over Polokwane City and this midweek match against the Rockets, the Brazilians have shown an uncharacteristic weakness in defence, particularly at set pieces – something coach Miguel Cardoso will be keen to address.

“It’s crazy, crazy how you can be targeted three times in two matches when you play in last year 50 and have the same number of [set piece] goals suffered,” said the Portuguese tactician.

“We have to go back on that and instill confidence because it’s always a matter of confidence, you cannot be on a set-piece without confidence.”

The weekend’s action opens on Friday evening at the Athlone Stadium, as Stellenbosch FC and Marumo Gallants both target a first win of the season, while Saturday – aside from the Chiefs v Sundowns showdown – features four further clashes.

Two regional derbies promise intense action, as Sekhukhune United host Polokwane City at the Seshego Stadium, while Durban City welcome Richards Bay to the Chatsworth Stadium.

In addition, AmaZulu will welcome Siwelele FC to the Kings Park Stadium, and top-flight rookies Milford FC and Kruger United will reignite a rivalry which drove the Motsepe Foundation Championship’s promotion race last season.

Sunday sees champions Orlando Pirates play a second successive game at the Kings Park Stadium in Durban (after their draw with AmaZulu in midweek), as they take on hosts Chippa United – with coach Abdeslam Ouaddou left frustrated by his team’s showing against Usuthu, and hoping for an improvement against the Chilli Boys.

“I love my team, and I will say that we certainly deserved more,” noted the Buccaneers coach. “I will talk about the second half because that’s when we played better, not the first half.

“We should have done better. But credit must go to AmaZulu, they are not an easy side to face.”

The weekend concludes at the Solomon Mahlangu Stadium on Sunday evening when TS Galaxy host Golden Arrows.
