Last season, the Betway Premiership crown was wrapped up early, champagne already on ice in Chloorkop. This time, the story is far more agonising for the Yellow Nation — because destiny has slipped out of their hands.
Wednesday night against Kaizer Chiefs was supposed to be the night Sundowns kept control. Instead, it became the night that may haunt them. Flavio Silva’s 24th minute strike had them chasing shadows, but Brayan Léon’s equaliser on 53 minutes reignited belief. From there, the Brazilians threw everything forward. Sixteen shots rained down on the Amakhosi goal, wave after wave of yellow shirts pressing for the winner.
And then came the moment. Deep into stoppage time, Teboho Mokoena whipped in a cross, Iqraam Rayners rose and thundered a header goalwards — only for Brandon Petersen to stretch, fingertip, and deny. A save that felt like defiance, a save that may yet decide the destiny of this season.
Because with that intervention, the pendulum swung. Advantage now lies with Orlando Pirates, Chiefs’ fiercest rivals. Sundowns must win their last two games and pray Pirates stumble in their remaining three. If both sides finish perfect, goal difference could crown the Buccaneers.
So how much will that single save matter? In the grand scheme, it could be everything. Petersen’s “not today” may echo as the moment the title slipped away.
