As one of the favourites to lift the 2026 FIFA World Cup trophy this year, Argentina will have to overcome a tricky Switzerland outfit in the quarterfinals at the Kansas City Stadium on Sunday morning.
Kick-off is at 3am (CAT, GMT+2).
CURRENT FORM
Argentina booked their ticket into the World Cup quarterfinals following a controversial 3-2 win over Egypt in the Round of 16 at the Atlanta Stadium last week.
While the game was remembered for officiating issues, Egypt ultimately blew a 2-0 lead with 10 minutes left on the clock as Cristian Romero, Lionel Messi and Enzo Fernandez got their names on the scoresheet to give Argentina the win.
Switzerland contended with a spirited Colombia outfit in the Round of 16 and came away with a 4-3 win on penalties to reach the last eight.
While the score remained 0-0 at the end of regulation time, Switzerland were aided by penalty misses from Davinson Sanchez and Cucho Hernandez en route to victory.
WHAT WAS SAID
Speaking ahead of the Switzerland tie, Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni praised Switzerland’s progression at the World Cup while noting experience as their biggest weapon so far.
"They have a long-standing history in World Cups," Scaloni said.
"They have very experienced players. They are strong. So it will be a tough opponent, that is for sure.
"We respect them very much, as we also do with other opponents. They eliminated Colombia. Colombia had been doing great during this World Cup."
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Argentina: Lionel Messi – On the back of an astonishing tournament so far, Messi will be under the spotlight yet again during the quarterfinals. With several World Cup records to his name already, Messi will also be focused on remaining as the showpiece’s top scorer after netting eight goals in five games.
Switzerland: Breel Embolo – The Swiss striker currently has two goals and two assists to his name at the World Cup and is expected to lead the line once more, while his physicality and movement in the box could be a stumbling block to the Argentine defensive unit.
