Magesi FC laid down an early statement of intent in the 2026/27 Motsepe Foundation Championship after they racked up a fourth successive win, defeating former co-leaders Highbury FC.
Magesi edged Highbury 1-0 at the NMU Stadium in Gqeberha on Sunday, with Naeem Amoojee scoring the only goal of the game – against his former club. As a result, Dikwena tsa Meetse sit at the top of the log with a full haul of 12 points from four matches – three points clear of Real Native and Highbury.
Sunday also saw Cape Town City claim a second win of the season by defeating derby rivals Hope FC 2-0 away at the Athlone Stadium – with Emile Witbooi and Cheswyn Philander netting for the Citizens, who rose to fifth spot.
Saturday featured six matches, two of which were thrilling, goal-laden encounters. At the Thohoyandou Stadium, Upington City claimed a 3-2 triumph over hosts Venda FC – thanks to a brace from Clayton Maravela and a strike by Nkosinathi Ndlovu – while the Malamulele Stadium saw Leicesterford City claim a stunning 4-1 away win over Gomora United. Banele Gama, Kavendree Makhene and Kamohelo Mahlatsi shared the goals for the Mpumalanga club.
Elsewhere, Hungry Lions picked up a first win of the season by defeating The Bees 2-0 at the Mxolisi Dicky Jacobs Stadium; Real Native won 1-0 away to Lerumo Lions at UJ Soweto Campus to temporarily go joint leaders of the log; University of Pretoria were held 0-0 at Tuks Stadium by Orbit College; and Midlands Wanderers and North West University shared the spoils 1-1 at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium.
Matchday 5 of the Motsepe Foundation Championship will be played from Friday 18 to Saturday 19 September.
