Morocco’s ambition to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup will face a stern test against the Netherlands in a Round of 32 match, set for Estadio Monterrey in Guadalupe, Mexico, on Tuesday morning SA time. (Kick-off is at 3am CAT).
FORM AND BACKGROUND
Morocco progressed confidently through Group C, going unbeaten in their matches against five-time champions Brazil (1-1) draw, Scotland (1-0 win) and Haiti (4-2 win).
The Atlas Lions finished level with Brazil on seven points, but had to settle for second place due to the South American side’s better goal difference (+6 to +3).
The North Africans demonstrated a high level of technical and tactical quality, controlling the games against Brazil and Scotland.
Against Haiti they demonstrated more attacking edge, but also showed some defensive frailties that coach Mohamed Ouahbi will be keen to address ahead of this knockout clash.
The Netherlands finished top of Group F with a seven-point haul after a 2-2 draw with Japan, followed by comfortable wins over Sweden (5-1) and Tunisia (3-1).
The Oranje have been fluid and cohesive in attack, but the four goals conceded speaks to a team that has not fully established a sense of balance and control.
Coach Ronald Koeman also has question marks hanging over him, with his defensive substitutions against Japan handing the initiative to the Samurai Blue – a mistake he cannot afford to repeat in the knockout stages.
This match is given added significance by the fact that the Netherlands boasts a large community with links to Morocco.
In fact, several players in the Moroccan squad were born in the Netherlands, including Noussair Mazraoui, Sofyan Amrabat and Anass Salah-Eddine.

WHAT THE TEAMS ARE SAYING
Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman
“I'm not sure if we are the favourite in the match against Morocco. We need to prepare for Morocco, because it'll be a big game. It's a good team with a lot of quality, and they can score easily.”
Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahbi
“Morocco have entered a new stage. The players now believe in their ability, and opponents respect Morocco. For that reason, our objective must be to win the World Cup. Winning the World Cup requires us to respect every team we face. I trust the work we are doing.”
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Netherlands – Brian Brobbey
While the Netherlands are renowned for a stylish way of playing, in Brian Brobbey they have a physical and aggressive striker who allows them to be more direct when necessary. The Sunderland man has netted three times across their big wins over Sweden and Tunisia, and will fancy his chances against Morocco.
Morocco – Ismael Saibari
The Bayern Munich-bound attacker has been outstanding for Morocco at the World Cup, scoring a goal in each of their three group stage matches. The 25-year-old will hope to keep up that form against the Netherlands and inspire the Atlas Lions to reach the Round of 16.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
The Netherlands and Morocco have met in three previous matches, with the European side holding a 2-1 win advantage over their African counterparts.
The teams’ most famous meeting was in the group stage of the 1994 World Cup in the USA – on the exact same date, June 29, that they will meet this year (NB: June 30 for African viewers due to the time difference).
The Dutch won that clash in Florida 2-1 thanks to goals from Dennis Bergkamp and Bryan Roy.
