The weekend’s Betway Premiership action saw leaders Orlando Pirates drop two points in their title push, while Kaizer Chiefs finally returned to winning ways.
Pirates could only manage a 1-1 draw at home to Siwelele FC on Saturday, with former Buccaneer star Vincent Pule putting the visitors ahead in the first half, before Tshepang Moremi continued his fine recent form with an equaliser six minutes into the second half.
The result saw Pirates open a one-point lead over Mamelodi Sundowns at the top of the log, but the reigning champions will have the chance to reclaim pole position with a game in hand at home to Marumo Gallants on Tuesday night.
Saturday also featured a 2-1 win for AmaZulu FC over Richards Bay in a KwaZulu-Natal derby (with Thabiso Kutumela and Hendrick Ekstein striking for Usuthu, either side of an equaliser for Sanele Barns), while Golden Arrows beat 10-man Gallants 2-1 away from home thanks to a brace of goals from Sede Junior Dion. The Ivorian-born striker is two goals clear at the top of the Premiership scoring charts with 12 strikes thus far.
Elsewhere, Sekhukhune United and Polokwane City played out a goalless stalemate in their derby clash, while bottom-of-the-log Magesi FC showed fighting spirit to hold Chippa United to a 2-2 home draw. The Chilli Boys established a two-goal lead via Ayabulela Konqobe and Somila Ntsundwana, but Mcedi Vandala and Sifiso Luthuli earned Dikwena tsa Meetse a share of the spoils.
The weekend action opened on Friday with a 1-1 draw between Stellenbosch FC and TS Galaxy (with the Rockets snapping a five-game losing streak even though Junior Zindoga’s opener was cancelled out by Wonderboy Makhubu), and then closed on Sunday with Chiefs edging Durban City 1-0 at the FNB Stadium.
The Amakhosi came into the match on the back of four successive defeats across all competitions, but a second-half strike from Glody Lilepo brought them a first league win since late January.
The Premiership will continue this coming midweek, with a rescheduled clash between Mamelodi Sundowns and Marumo Gallants on Tuesday, 17 March, followed by Golden Arrows v Stellenbosch the following evening.
