The countdown is over, MTN8 WAFA WAFA, There Can Only Be One campaign has officially landed, signalling the start of another thrilling MTN8 tournament where every match is do-or-die, every goal changes history, and only one team emerges victorious.
MTN and the Premier Soccer League (PSL) officially launch the 2026 MTN8 Tournament, welcoming South Africa's top eight clubs to compete for the first silverware of the new football season. Over the coming weeks, millions of football fans across the country will once again witness the drama, excitement and unforgettable moments that define the WAFA WAFA spirit.
For 18 years, MTN8 WAFA WAFA has become synonymous with South Africa's premier knockout football competition, capturing the intensity, passion and unpredictability that make the MTN8 unlike any other tournament. There are no second chances, no room for error, and every whistle could be the last, because in the MTN8, there can only be one champion.
MTN SA’s Kholofelo Magagane said the campaign continues to embody the very essence of South African knockout football.
"The MTN8 is more than just a football competition. It is a platform that brings South Africans together through their shared love of the beautiful game, while creating opportunities to reward our customers, celebrate our football heroes and make a positive impact in communities across the country.
Commenting on this year’s theme, Magagane said: "The MTN8 has always been a tournament that rewards courage, consistency and excellence. This year's theme, 'There Can Only Be One,' perfectly captures what makes this competition so special. Every match is a knockout encounter. One performance can define a season, one goal can change history, and only one team will ultimately lift the trophy. That relentless pursuit of excellence resonates strongly with MTN's own ambition to be the best. Just as the eight qualifying teams have earned their place through hard work and determination, MTN continues to invest in connecting South Africans and enabling them to seize every opportunity. We are proud to support a competition that celebrates resilience, ambition and the belief that when the moment arrives, you have one chance to make it count."
"This year, we are once again bringing the WAFA WAFA spirit to life both on and off the field through unforgettable customer experiences, exciting competitions and impactful legacy initiatives that ensure everyone has a chance to be part of the action," continues Magagane.
Recharge and Win a Share of R10 million
While South Africa's top eight clubs battle for MTN8 glory, MTN is ensuring that customers experience the excitement beyond the ninety minutes.
Through the Recharge and Win campaign, prepaid customers who recharge with R30 or more daily can claim free 500MB streaming data via the MTN App under My Gifts and enter to the MTN8 competition to stand a chance of winning a share of R10 million in weekly prizes including fan experiences, MoMo vouchers, grocery vouchers and fuel vouchers. The free 500MB Streaming data bundle gives access to DStv Stream, SABC+ and MTN OneTV.
The excitement doesn't end there. One lucky MTN customer will be crowned the Ultimate Fan through the Last Fan Standing competition, walking away with the ultimate R1 million grand prize.
The MTN8 WAFA WAFA Legacy
Through initiatives such as Goals for Charity, Last Legend Standing, Dream Bags, Last Fan Standing and Last Journalist Standing, MTN continues to invest in communities, reward loyal supporters, celebrate football legends and recognise the journalists who help tell the stories that inspire millions of South Africans.
As part of the Goals for Charity initiative, MTN will donate R20 000 for every goal scored during regulation time throughout the tournament, turning every strike on the field into meaningful support for charitable causes.
The Last Legend Standing initiative gives former football greats the opportunity to compete for causes close to their hearts, while the Dream Bags Initiative continues to equip selected schools across the country with football and netball equipment to help inspire the next generation of sporting talent.
Recognising the important role the media plays in growing South African football, the Last Journalist Standing competition once again gives football journalists the opportunity to compete for the coveted title throughout the tournament.
South Africa's Top Eight Ready for Battle
