Malawi women’s national football team first-choice goalkeeper Mercy Sikelo has completed a permanent transfer to Lilongwe’s Civil Service United women’s team.
Civil United confirmed in a statement that the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) star has signed a two-year contract from Ntopwa Ladies of Blantyre.
SIKELO ENDS LOAN FEUD
The 28-year-old had spent last season with the NBM Women’s Championship side on loan, and her transfer was marred by disagreements over a transfer fee, something which has now been resolved paving the way for the permanent switch.
The standoff saw Sikelo sitting out of Civil United domestic games raising concern on her fitness levels going into the 2028 Olympic Games qualifying matches against Zimbabwe.
SCORCHERS’ DIVISIVE FIGURE
The Scorchers No 1 remains the first option for national team coach Lovemore Fazili despite her continued erratic performances between the sticks, producing world class saves only to be let down by poor ball handling that prove costly.
Despite the gaffes, Sikelo led Malawi to the 2023 COSAFA Women’s Championship title for the first and last time ever and more recently the WAFCON silver medal finish.
