As another testing round in the Motsepe Foundation Championship came to a close, log leaders Milford dropped crucial points in their bid for automatic promotion to the PSL, while the likes of Kruger United and Casric Stars drew closer to the top.
Milford, who faced the lowly Midlands Wanderers on Saturday, suffered a 1-0 defeat away from home. While Milford hold a lofty position in the league, Midlands were in need of vital points themselves as they continued to flirt with the relegation zone.
The win saw Midlands Wanderers move into 13th position on 20 points, three away from the drop zone, while Milford remained on 36 points.
Also sitting on 36 points after 19 games is Kruger United, who secured a 3-1 win against Venda Football Academy on Friday afternoon.
Kruger have now recorded two wins on the spin and are unbeaten in their last five league matches as they end their latest league assignment in second spot.
Cape Town City remained resolute in their pursuit of automatic promotion after securing a 1-0 win against Lerumo Lions on Sunday afternoon.
The Citizens faced a tough task away from home; the score remained tied 0-0 until the 88th minute before Dzenan Zajmovic scored a crucial winner.
The Citizens are now one point away from Kruger and Milford, with yet another run of back-to-back wins in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
At the bottom of the table, Baroka’s woes deepened this weekend following their 1-0 defeat against the University of Pretoria on Sunday.
Bakgakga ended the weekend in 15th position on 17 points with relegation to South Africa’s amateur ranks becoming a real prospect.
Similarly, Black Leopards face the possibility of dropping out of the division, particularly after their 2-1 loss against Hungry Lions on Sunday.
