Platinum City Rovers lead GAC after Round 2
Platinum City Rovers are the only team with a 100 per cent record in the GladAfrica Championship, after the completion of Round 2 with eight matches across South Africa this weekend.
Following a 1-0 away win over Free State Stars last weekend, Rovers made it two from two when they claimed a thrilling 3-2 victory over JDR Stars at Olen Park in Potchefstroom on Saturday.
A brace from Thabiso Nkoana and a late winner from William Radebe took Ashwin Sutton’s team to a full haul of six points and a place at the top of the log for the next two weeks at least.
The weekend opened on Friday afternoon at Parow Park, where Roger De Sa’s Cape Town All Stars claimed their first win of the season in another five-goal thriller, overcoming TS Sporting 3-2 thanks to strikes from Eleazar Rodgers, Ndiviwe Mdabuka and Sergio Kammies.
Saturday, aside from Rovers’ victory, also saw Polokwane City and Venda FC record home wins over Cape Town Spurs and Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila respectively, Richards Bay and Free State Stars drew 0-0, and Hungry Lions claimed a 2-1 triumph away to Pretoria Callies with a second-half brace from Pitso Tlotlego.
Sunday’s action featured a narrow win for Pretoria University, who edged Jomo Cosmos 1-0 at TUKS Stadium – with a goal from Kamohelo Pheeane – to send Ezenkosi to the bottom of the log, while Uthongathi and Black Leopards played to a 1-1 draw at Princess Magogo Stadium: the visitors led early through Tiklas Thutlwa, but an Issa Sarr penalty earned the hosts a share of the spoils.
The GAC will resume with a full round of fixtures on the weekend of 11-12 September.
