Almeria sacked coach Gaizka Garitano on Wednesday, naming Pepe Mel in his place as the bottom club continue their search for a first win of the La Liga season.

Garitano had only taken over following the sacking of Vicente Moreno in October, but failed to turn things around for a team seemingly destined for relegation.

Almeria are 14 points from safety and only have 10 matches left to avoid becoming the first side to go an entire Spanish top-flight campaign without posting a single victory.

The worst record is two wins, achieved by four clubs, most recently Sporting Gijon in 1997-98.

Former Real Betis and West Bromwich Albion boss Mel left his previous club OFI Crete in February after only 12 games in charge.

Almeria still need two more points to surpass the all-time record for lowest tally in a season in one of Europe's top five leagues, set by Derby County in the 2007-08 Premier League.
