Bayern v Lazio: what the stats say
After winning their first two Uefa Champions League matches against Lazio in the 2020-21 last 16, Bayern München lost the first leg of this season’s tie 1-0 at the Stadio Olimpico.
Lazio have never won an away Uefa Champions League match in Germany in four attempts (D2 L2), including a 2-1 defeat to Bayern München in March 2021. However, having beaten them 1-0 in the first leg, the Italian side are looking to become the first side since Real Madrid in 2016-17 to win home and away against Bayern in the same Champions League campaign.
Bayern München suffered a 1-0 defeat in the first leg of this Uefa Champions League tie against Lazio but the Germans have only gone out as early as the Last 16 in one of their last 12 seasons in the competition, doing so in 2018-19 against eventual winners Liverpool (1-3 on aggregate).
Across all major European competitions, Lazio have progressed from 12 of their last 13 knockout ties when winning the first leg; the exception was in the 2017-18 Uefa Europa League quarterfinal against FC RB Salzburg (4-2 first leg, 1-4 second leg).
Bayern München have been eliminated from each of their last seven Uefa Champions League ties when they have lost the first leg, and 11 out of 14 overall. However, the two previous times they lost the first leg of a Last 16 tie, they have recovered to qualify: in 2006-07 v Real Madrid (2-3 first leg, 2-1 second leg, progressed on away goals) and 2011-12 v Basle (0-1 first leg, 7-0 second leg).
Lazio are looking to reach their first Uefa Champions League quarterfinal since the 1999-00 season, when they qualified via the second group stage under Sven-Göran Eriksson. They have lost their two previous away knockout games in the competition, losing 5-2 to Valencia (1999-00 quarterfinal) and 2-1 to Bayern München (2020-21 last 16).
Ciro Immobile is Lazio’s all-time leading scorer in major European competitions with 26 goals, and only Simone Inzaghi (15) has more in the Uefa Champions League than Immobile (nine in 12 games). In Europe for Lazio, Immobile has scored 20 in 23 home games (one every 85 mins), compared to six in 20 away games (one every 231 mins).
Harry Kane has been involved in 19 goals in 19 home Uefa Champions League appearances (12 goals & three assists for Spurs; three goals, one assist for Bayern). However, he has never scored in three home knockout games, with 15 goals the most any player has scored at home without ever finding the net in a home knockout game.
Luis Alberto has created the most chances (21) and made the most line-breaking passes (62) of any Lazio player in the Uefa Champions League this season. Indeed, he’s also been involved in the most shot-ending sequences of play (43) for the Italian side in the competition this term.
Bayern München’s Jamal Musiala has made 29 appearances in the Uefa Champions League, the most by a German player aged 21 or under in the competition’s history (one more than Mario Götze, 28).
