It still rates as the greatest comeback in Varsity Cup history. Heck, it probably is in all tournaments as well. There are few games that quite capture a comeback like thousands of crazy students cheering on their team.

And deep into the 74th minute of the game, it looked like Robert du Preez (senior) had coached his side to a trophy - leading 33-15 and with the clock ticking down.

But then the unthinkable happened. Not once, not twice but three times.

UCT scored three tries in six minutes to shock the country, steal the Varsity Cup trophy, and set off some amazing celebrations in the student tournament.

There were moments that changed the game. Not only Johnny Welthagen's decision to try a drop goal in the final seconds that gave the Cape Town side their chance, but the audacious optimism that carried them through to the title.

So as UCT try again Monday night to add another title to their impressive run in the Varsity Cup, sit back and relive the ending to this amazing game.

A comeback like no other. Ten years on, it still continues to amaze

*The Varsity Cup final will be live on SuperSport Rugby at 7pm with the build-up starting at 6:30pm. Also watch profile interviews with UCT’s captain Luthando Woji and coach Tom Dawson-Squib, done by Cato Louw, from 5:30pm.
