Liverpool will face Chelsea in the final at Wembley on Saturday, May 14. This is a second final against Thomas Tuchel’s side in as many months. This will be the fourth time the two sides have met this season, twice in the Premier League (1-1, 2-2) and once in the League Cup final that the Reds, of course, won in a penalty shootout.
It will mark 10 years since the Reds’ last outing at Wembley for the FA Cup final, while Chelsea have been in four of the last five – winning only one in 2017-18.
Liverpool’s route to the final saw them come up against opposition in League One, the Championship and the Premier League, winning all five within 90 minutes:
Shrewsbury (H) – 4-1
Cardiff City (H) – 3-1
Norwich (H) – 2-1
Nottingham Forest (A) – 1-0
Man City (N) – 3-2
Chelsea have similarly met clubs throughout the English leagues, but were forced once to go to extra time:
Chesterfield (H) – 5-1
Plymouth (H) – 2-1 (AET)
Luton (A) – 3-2
Middlesbrough (A) – 2-0
Crystal Palace (N) – 2-0
Liverpool's Jurgen Klopp is the first manager of any English side to have taken his team to all three major Cup finals in the same season. With the Premier League title race going down to the wire, a historic quadruple is still on the cards, and the Reds will be looking to win their seventh European Cup when they take on Real Madrid in Paris on Saturday, 28 May.
Liverpool will be the obvious favourites in the FA Cup final against Chelsea and will aim to prove that Klopp has a better squad at his disposal than Pep Guardiola does at Manchester City. It is Liverpool's 15th appearance in the showpiece and their first since 2012 when they lost 2-1 to Chelsea. They last won the trophy in 2006 when they beat West Ham United on penalties after a thrilling 3-3 draw in Cardiff. Liverpool FC, who were held to a 1-1 draw by Tottenham on Saturday night, will return to Premier League action on Tuesday when they travel to take on Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa side.
The Reds will then face Chelsea FC in the FA Cup final on Saturday before their final two Premier League games against Southampton and Wolves.
Liverpool FC star Mohamed Salah turned up the heat ahead of the final last week when he posted a tweet aimed at Real Madrid, saying: “We have a score to settle.”
These two teams have met 39 times in the last several seasons.
Out of 39 previous meetings, Chelsea have won 12 matches while Liverpool have won 13. In total, 14 matches between them have ended in draws.
Chelsea have been mediocre at home recently while Liverpool are performing very well away from home.
Previous matches between Chelsea and Liverpool have averaged 2.36 goals.
Red versus blue. It’s as classic as football itself.
Chelsea will be wearing the yellow away kits — even though technically they are the home team. Chelsea have already won the Uefa Super Cup as well as the Club World Cup this season, wearing their traditional colours, but they lost the League Cup final to Liverpool in their traditional blue.
The blues have not had any luck whatsoever as of late in the home kit, opting to wear their yellow strip for the semifinal victory against Crystal Palace (again, as the home team).
The FA Cup final referee for the match between Chelsea and Liverpool on May 14 will be Craig Pawson.
The Football Association has confirmed the 43-year-old will be assisted by Dan Cook and Edward Smart, while the fourth official will be David Coote. The video assistant referee will be Paul Tierney and his assistant will be Simon Bennett.
Pawson is one of 10 Fifa-ranked referees in the select group one list in the Premier League and is the most senior of the officials not to have refereed an FA Cup final. The FA Cup final is regarded as the pinnacle of an English referee’s career, although others such as Howard Webb and Mark Clattenburg have in the past gone on to officiate Uefa Champions League, European Championship and World Cup finals.
