- - From the roar of the 2010 FIFA World Cup to Sergio Agüero’s unforgettable title-winning strike.
- - From the rise of some of SuperSport’s most recognisable presenters to the stories that unite a continent.
- - It is time to celebrate SuperSport Blitz's two decades at the heart of sport.
There are moments in sport that become part of a nation’s memory.
The goal that sends an entire stadium into delirium. The final whistle that turns tension into uncontainable joy.
The record that leaves even the greatest athletes searching for words. And then there are the voices, faces and stories that help us understand what we have just witnessed - and why it matters.
For 20 years, SuperSport Blitz has been there to bring those moments into focus.
Since launching in 2006, Blitz has grown from a combination of sports reports and highlights into a round-the-clock destination for sports news, information, highlights and discovery.
Available to DStv viewers on channel 200, it has become a familiar part of the sporting landscape: the place fans turn to catch up, relive the action, settle a debate or find out what everyone will be talking about tomorrow.
But the story of Blitz begins before its first broadcast.
It begins with a vision, a willingness to think beyond the conventions of sports broadcasting and a handful of people who recognised an opportunity to change the way audiences experienced sport.
Its significance cannot be measured simply in bulletins broadcast, highlights shown or hours spent on air.
Its story is also written in the foresight of its founders, the history it has covered, the talent it has helped develop and the extraordinary team that has worked behind the scenes to keep Africa connected to the sports it loves.
As the channel marks its 20th birthday, it celebrates not merely the passing of two decades, but a place in the lives of generations of sports fans.

A Vision That Changed the Way Africa Follows Sport
Every enduring idea begins with someone imagining what could be possible.
For Blitz, that vision came from a recognition that the sports rights SuperSport had acquired offered an opportunity beyond live broadcasts: they could be used to bring fans concise, timely updates on the action, wherever they were and whenever they wanted them.
Koos Bekker, then head of Naspers, was always thinking ahead.
He saw the potential in using SuperSport’s sports rights to deliver short-form sports updates, opening the door to a new way of keeping audiences connected to the games and stories they cared about.
Imtiaz Patel drove that vision forward.
The initial thinking was to deliver the updates to audiences through DVB-H, a technology designed to bring television content to mobile phones.
But the potential quickly became bigger than the original concept. What began as an idea for mobile viewing revealed an even greater opportunity on television — a dedicated channel that could keep sports fans informed throughout the day.
Turning that vision into a reality required people who could translate the idea into a compelling broadcasting proposition.
Tex Teixeira and Docky Dockrat took up that challenge, developing the concept and helping shape the channel that viewers would come to know as Blitz.
The name itself was Tex’s inspiration.
In a lightbulb moment, he landed on Blitz — a name that captured the idea of a fire-starter: immediate, energetic and designed to ignite interest. It was a fitting identity for a channel built to deliver the latest sporting developments with urgency and impact.
Dockrat brought a different but complementary perspective to the project.
Drawing on his background in radio sports reporting, he conceptualised a format that combined the immediacy and concise storytelling of a radio sports bulletin with the power of television visuals.
The ambition was to bring fans as close to real-time sports updates as possible, creating a dynamic viewing experience that could capture the essential information and excitement of the sporting world.
That combination of foresight, editorial thinking and practical execution gave Blitz its foundations.
It was not simply a highlights service with a new name; it was a fresh way of presenting sport, designed to make the breadth of SuperSport’s offering more accessible and keep viewers connected to the stories unfolding across multiple codes.
Twenty years later, that original thinking remains at the heart of the channel. The technology and platforms have changed dramatically, but the principle is as relevant as ever: give sports fans timely, engaging and reliable information, and make it easy for them to discover what matters.
The visionaries who set Blitz in motion helped create more than a channel.
They established a platform that would evolve with its audience, grow alongside SuperSport and become a familiar part of the sporting lives of millions.
When History Happens, Blitz is There
Ask sports fans where they were when a defining moment unfolded, and the memories often come flooding back.
Ask them what made those moments even more memorable, and the coverage that brought them into homes, conversations and collective consciousness is part of the answer.
For Blitz, few assignments have carried the significance of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
South Africa was preparing to host the world’s biggest football tournament, the first FIFA World Cup to be staged on African soil.
The occasion was about far more than football: it was an opportunity for a continent to welcome the world and tell its own story.
Blitz played an important role in SuperSport’s coverage, with journalists across Africa helping bring news, insight and information to audiences throughout the continent.
The scale of the undertaking was immense, but so was the opportunity — to reflect the excitement of a historic tournament while ensuring African fans were at the heart of the story.
And what a story it was. Siphiwe Tshabalala’s thunderous opening goal against Mexico at Soccer City became one of the defining images of South Africa 2010, a moment that seemed to release the emotion of a nation all at once.
The vuvuzelas, the packed stadiums, the colour in the stands and the sense of continental pride made the tournament unforgettable. Spain would ultimately lift the trophy, but the tournament’s legacy belonged to something much bigger than the final result.
For Cyrus Rogers, Managing Editor of Blitz, the effort required to deliver that unprecedented coverage remains one of the channel’s greatest achievements.
“The effort that it took to provide Africa with unprecedented coverage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup is one of the great achievements on the channel and for SuperSport as a whole,” Rogers says, highlighting the contribution of journalists across the continent who brought the very best news and information to audiences.
It was a defining example of Blitz’s purpose: to make the biggest sporting occasions feel close, immediate and meaningful, wherever the viewer was watching from.
Two years later, football delivered another moment that would become part of the sport’s enduring folklore.
On the final day of the 2011/12 English Premier League season, Manchester City needed a win against Queens Park Rangers to secure their first league title in 44 years. City were trailing 2-1 deep into stoppage time, while Manchester United had won their own match and were poised to take the crown.

Then came Edin Džeko’s equaliser. And then, with the clock showing 93 minutes and 20 seconds, Sergio Agüero collected the ball, drove into the penalty area and scored the goal that changed everything.
In the space of seconds, a title that appeared to be slipping away was City's. The Etihad erupted. The Premier League had delivered one of its most astonishing finishes, and football history had been rewritten.
Blitz was across both matches, with SuperSport using a split-screen broadcast to follow the action as it unfolded. The channel’s coverage included both games in its bulletin and a minute-by-minute insert that charted the extraordinary swings in the title race.
For Rogers, it remains the perfect illustration of what Blitz can do.
“The drama was not confined to the goal itself. It was in the shifting possibilities, the uncertainty, the seconds that seemed to stretch into an eternity and the realisation that an entire season could turn on one final act.
“Blitz helped bring that drama together, giving viewers the context and chronology of a finish that few who witnessed it will ever forget.
“That is the power of sports news at its best. It does more than tell you what happened. It helps you appreciate how it happened — and why you may still be talking about it years later.”
It is a philosophy that reaches back to the channel’s original conception: bring the action, the information and the pictures together in a way that makes sport immediate and accessible.
From an idea born in the early days of mobile television to a bulletin capturing one of football’s most extraordinary finishes, the purpose has remained remarkably consistent.
A Nation United in Green and Gold

Some sporting memories belong to a club or a particular generation. Others seem to belong to everyone.
South Africa’s Rugby World Cup triumphs have provided several such occasions.
The Springboks’ victories in 2007, 2019 and 2023 each occupy a special place in the country’s sporting story, with the latter two delivering moments of collective celebration that reached well beyond rugby’s traditional audience.
Blitz was there to cover the excitement surrounding the 2019 and 2023 triumphs, including the trophy tours that took the Webb Ellis Cup to communities across South Africa.
The celebrations offered a vivid reminder of sport’s ability to cross boundaries, bring people together and give a nation a shared reason to smile.
The 2023 tour, in particular, carried the trophy through major centres including Pretoria, Johannesburg, Soweto, Cape Town, Durban and the Eastern Cape.
Rogers remembers those celebrations as among the most special experiences for the Blitz team: an outpouring of love and joy from sports fans of all colours and religions.
He describes the experience as unifying, much like the 2010 World Cup — two very different sporting occasions connected by a common thread. In both, the action on the field became a catalyst for something larger: pride, belonging and the simple pleasure of celebrating together.
Yet Blitz’s sporting scrapbook extends far beyond football and rugby. It includes the extraordinary sight of Chad le Clos defeating his childhood hero Michael Phelps to win Olympic gold in the 200m butterfly at London 2012; Caster Semenya’s Olympic 800m gold-medal performances in 2012 and 2016; and Wayde van Niekerk’s astonishing 400m world record at Rio 2016.
Van Niekerk’s run was a performance for the ages. Starting in the outside lane, he powered around the track to win in 43.03 seconds, breaking Michael Johnson’s long-standing world record and becoming the first man to win the Olympic 400m from lane eight.
It was the kind of achievement that made the impossible look momentarily ordinary — until the clock revealed what the world had just witnessed.
These are the moments that give a sports channel its archive and its emotional resonance.
The medals, records and trophies matter, but so do the stories behind them: the years of preparation, the pressure of the occasion, the heartbreak of defeat and the joy that follows triumph.
Blitz has spent two decades helping fans follow those stories across sporting codes, from football, rugby and cricket to athletics, swimming and beyond. It has made a sprawling sporting world easier to navigate, ensuring that the biggest moments do not disappear when the final whistle blows.

Blitz’s legacy is not only found in the events it has covered. It can also be seen in the careers of the people who have passed through its newsroom and studios.
Over the years, the channel has served as a proving ground for a remarkable range of broadcasting talent.
Among the familiar names associated with Blitz are Sias du Plessis, Julia Stuart, Fiso Mazibuko, Lwazi Ziqubu, Owen Hannie, Crystal Arnold, Cindy Poluta, Arnold Geerdts, Udo Carelse, Thato Moeng, Nandi Tshabalala, Elma Smit, Leigh-Anne Paulick, Morena Mothupi and Motshidisi Mohono.
Their paths have taken them in different directions, across television, radio and international broadcasting, but their journeys reflect an important part of Blitz’s contribution to the wider sports media landscape.
Julia Stuart has gone on to present for SuperSport and now works in the United Kingdom for the Premier League, bringing her experience to one of the most followed football competitions in the world.

Motshidisi Mohono has become one of South Africa’s most recognisable rugby presenters, widely celebrated as the “First Lady of Rugby”.
Cindy Poluta has continued to make her mark in radio at 702, while Thato Moeng, Fiso Mazibuko, Lwazi Ziqubu and Crystal Arnold have become familiar faces within the SuperSport world.
For a channel built around the immediacy of sport, developing talent is a longer-term contribution — one that continues long after a presenter’s final bulletin.
It is about creating an environment in which journalists and broadcasters can learn their craft, sharpen their instincts, find their voice and earn the trust of viewers.
The names may change on screen, and careers may take people to new platforms and new countries, but the experience gained in a fast-moving sports newsroom is a powerful foundation. Every breaking story demands judgement.
Every bulletin requires clarity. Every major event tests the ability to communicate the drama without losing sight of the facts.
That is part of the Blitz story, too: the people who have grown with the channel and the talent it has helped send into the wider world.
The development of these broadcasters is also a continuation of the original vision. A channel conceived to bring sports stories to viewers in a new way has, in turn, helped prepare a generation of storytellers to bring those stories to new audiences.
The People Behind the Picture
For all the iconic moments and recognisable faces, a channel that broadcasts around the clock is built on the work of people viewers may never see.
Journalists, producers, editors, technical crews, operations teams, graphics operators and L-Bar operators all contribute to the finished product.
Their work is often invisible when everything runs smoothly — which is precisely the point. The viewer sees a clear, compelling bulletin; behind it lies a coordinated effort to make sure the information is accurate, the pictures are right and the story is told well.
Rogers points to the camaraderie across the Blitz team as one of its defining strengths.
Everyone, he says, shares the same goal: to make each bulletin entertaining, informative and enjoyable, and to ensure Blitz remains a place viewers want to visit for the best of what SuperSport has to offer.
He also singles out Gerald de Kock, who has been a cornerstone of the channel since its inception, describing him as a legend in the African and global sports broadcasting environment.
That recognition speaks to the value of experience in a newsroom where the pace rarely relents.
Technology changes, platforms evolve and the way audiences consume sport continues to shift, but the importance of editorial judgement, teamwork and a shared commitment to quality remains.
A channel’s identity is built over time, through the standards it sets and the people who uphold them. Blitz’s 20 years are a tribute to the entire team — on screen and behind the scenes — that has helped keep the channel moving.
It is also a reminder that an idea, however ambitious, only becomes a lasting institution through the commitment of the people who carry it forward.
The visionaries who imagined Blitz, the people who built its format and the generations of staff who have sustained it all form part of the same story.
In a World That Never Stops Scrolling, Quality Matters
The media landscape of 2006 is almost unrecognisable from the one sports fans inhabit today. Social platforms deliver updates in seconds.
Highlights can appear online within minutes of the final whistle. Fans follow their teams through an ever-growing mix of broadcasters, websites, apps and social feeds.
For a channel that began as a highlights destination, that shift has demanded constant evolution.
Rogers believes the real game-changer has been social media and web-based content, which has accelerated the speed at which news travels and highlights are consumed. But in a world where information is everywhere, speed alone is no longer enough.
“Quality has become the big differentiator,” he says.
Blitz’s approach, he explains, has been to prioritise accurate reporting and strong work rather than focusing on pace at the expense of substance.
“The newsroom remains alert to breaking stories across newswires and social platforms, while adapting its coverage plans and reporting style to changing audience preferences.”
That balance is increasingly important.
“A goal may take seconds to circulate, but the context around it still matters. A transfer rumour may spread rapidly, but audiences need reporting they can trust. A major result is only one part of a wider sporting story.”
“Blitz’s role is therefore not simply to be first. It is to help viewers make sense of the action, discover what matters and find a reliable home for sports news and highlights across the SuperSport offering.”
The channel has evolved because its audience has evolved. Its commitment to quality is what Rogers believes keeps viewers coming back.
“In many ways, the evolution reflects the adaptability built into the channel from the beginning. The original concept brought together the concise reporting of radio and the immediacy of television visuals to give fans a new way to follow sport.”
“Today, the same commitment to connecting audiences with the stories that matter continues across a vastly changed media environment.”
“The platforms may multiply and the pace may quicken, but the need for trusted sports journalism remains.”
Twenty Years In — and The Next Chapter is Only Beginning
If two decades of sport have taught Blitz anything, it is that the next unforgettable moment is always just around the corner.
Rogers points to the constant emergence of new sporting talent, the evolution of technology and the rise of new formats as reasons to be excited about what lies ahead.
He recalls the arrival of T20 cricket in the mid-2000s and how dramatically the format has reshaped the game.
He also reflects on the advances in officiating technology, from goal-line technology to VAR and remote replay centres — innovations that would have seemed far-fetched to many fans when Blitz first launched.
Sport never stands still. New stars arrive, established champions are challenged, tactics evolve and new audiences discover new passions.
The next great athlete, the next historic final and the next moment that brings a country to its feet may not yet be known.
That uncertainty is part of the magic — and it is why a channel like Blitz still matters.
For 20 years, it has helped fans keep up with the action, understand the stories and hold on to the moments worth remembering.
It has been present for triumphs that united a nation, records that rewrote the history books, football finishes that defied belief and the rise of broadcasters who have gone on to make their own mark.
Its greatest achievement may be the sum of all these things: a channel that has become part of the way millions of people experience sport.
But its legacy also reaches back to the people who first imagined what it could be.
Koos Bekker’s forward-thinking idea, Imtiaz Patel’s drive to turn that idea into an opportunity, and the work of Tex Teixeira and Docky Dockrat to shape and build the channel helped establish the foundations on which two decades of sporting stories would unfold.
That original spark has grown into a lasting presence in African sports broadcasting — one that has adapted, developed talent, brought viewers closer to history and continued to find new ways to tell the stories they love.
Twenty years on, Blitz is more than a place to catch up on the scores.
It is a living record of sporting history, a platform for the people who tell those stories and a daily reminder of why sport continues to captivate us.
The next chapter will bring new names, new technologies and new moments that no one could have predicted. When they arrive, the challenge will remain the same: to tell the story accurately, vividly and with the energy it deserves.
For SuperSport Blitz, the first 20 years have been quite a ride. And if sport has taught us anything, it is that the best moments are often the ones nobody sees coming.
Here’s to the next 20.
Happy 20th birthday, SuperSport Blitz!
