The US Women's Open at famed Pebble Beach Golf Links earned the major championship's largest TV audience since 2014, NBC said on Tuesday.

Allisen Corpuz, a 25-year-old from the Honolulu area, broke away from the pack over the final nine holes and won by three shots in Pebble Beach's first time hosting a modern-era women's major.

That final round averaged 1.58 million viewers between NBC and Peacock. It peaked at 2.2 million viewers.

For context, the PGA Tour's event of the week, the John Deere Classic, averaged 1.58 million on television on Sunday, while NBC's linear TV broadcast of the women had an average of 1.55 million.

The event averaged a total audience of 895 000 over the 20 hours of linear TV coverage throughout the week, up 118 per cent from last year. The only edition of the major since 2009 with more viewership was in 2014 (1.03 million).

Corpuz won her first major title the same week that fellow Hawaiian and former golf prodigy Michelle Wie West played the final event of her career. In another coincidence, Wie West's lone major victory came at that highly viewed 2014 US Women's Open.
