Martin Leon produced a spectacular final-round charge to win the BET Blu Label Unlimited Invitational #4 at State Mines Country Club, overturning a three-shot deficit to claim the title by five shots.
Leon saved his best golf for last, firing a brilliant nine-under-par 63 to finish the three-round tournament on 18-under-par 198 and turn what had looked like a wide-open contest after 36 holes into a commanding victory.
The win was particularly impressive given Leon’s position heading into the final round. He opened the tournament with an excellent eight-under 64, immediately putting himself among the leading contenders.
A second-round 71 took him to nine under for the tournament, but left him three shots behind the leaders and in a tie for sixth.
At the halfway stage, Stefan Jacobs, Brandon Pieters and Wandre Snyman shared the lead on 12-under-par 132. Daniel Smith and Brandon-Lee Geere were two shots further back at 10 under, while Leon and Francois van Staden were among the chasing pack on nine under.
With so little separating the leading players, the final round promised a dramatic finish.
Leon delivered exactly that.
The South African was virtually flawless on the final day, producing a bogey-free 63 to add nine shots under par and finish at 18 under.
His closing round was the defining performance of the tournament, lifting him from sixth place to the top of the leaderboard and giving him a remarkable five-shot winning margin.
Behind him, Daniel Smith and amateur Stefan Jacobs shared second place on 13-under-par 203.
Jacobs had been one of the tournament’s standout performers, beginning the final round in the three-way lead after an outstanding 63 in the second round.
He remained in contention but could not match Leon’s extraordinary closing performance.
Smith also put together a strong tournament and finished five shots behind the champion.
There was another three-way tie for fourth, with Leon Visser, Carl Mwale and Francois van Staden all finishing on 11-under-par 205.
DAY BELONGED TO LEON
Van Staden had been among the early contenders after opening with a 66 and remained firmly in the hunt throughout the tournament, while Visser and Mwale also produced consistent performances across the three rounds.
Ethan Gough and Brandon Pieters shared seventh on 10-under-par 206. Pieters had made the perfect start with a 63 in the opening round and briefly held the outright lead, but was unable to maintain that momentum as the tournament progressed.
Four players then shared ninth place on nine-under-par 207: Danie van Niekerk, Haydn Driver, Corey Sheppard and Wandre Snyman.
For Snyman, the final result was a disappointing conclusion after being part of the three-way tie for the lead entering the final round. He had been perfectly positioned to challenge for the title but ultimately finished eight shots behind Leon.
The tournament showcased just how competitive the BET Blu Label Unlimited circuit has become, with the leaderboard changing dramatically from the opening round through to the final day.
Pieters set the early pace with a 63, before Jacobs and Snyman joined him at the top after two rounds. But it was Leon who produced the decisive performance when the pressure was at its highest.
His three-round scores of 64, 71 and 63 told the story of a tournament in which he remained within striking distance before producing an exceptional finish.
The final leaderboard reflected the quality of the competition, with the champion finishing five shots clear and several of South Africa’s emerging golfers recording impressive top-10 finishes.
But ultimately, the day belonged to Leon.
A bogey-free 63, an overall score of 18 under par, and a five-shot victory gave a memorable triumph at State Mines Country Club and one of the most emphatic finishes of the BET Blu Label Unlimited Invitational series.
