I loved what champion golfer turned champion commentator David Feherty said during the final round of the LIV Golf blockbuster at Steyn City.
“South Africa has the best sports fans in the world,” mused the Irishman , “and they deserve this.”
Yes, the enthusiasm showed by the very vocal and boisterous 100 000 fans lining the fairways at this splendid golf course over the four days was hard, if not impossible, to beat.
Even when the heavens opened and the umbrellas came out, there was no dampening of spirits.
A gallery of this magnitude has never been seen in this country before, not even in the old "Million Dollar" days when a dozen or so of the world’s best players gathered at Sun City to play for a winner-take-all $1-million.
Those were heady days. And anyone who walked through the gates at Steyn City, or watched the action on SuperSport, would agree that these too were heady days. Days to remember.
And the golf was absolutely spectacular, as two of the world's best golfers fought it out for individual honours in a birdie-fest, and the team competition produced a heart-stopping finish.
So Feherty was spot on when he said the fans got what they deserved.

Yes, it was heartbreaking for the Southern Guards that, in spite of leading the team competition by nine during the early part of the final round, they were ultimately hauled in and overtaken by the fast-finishing Crushers' birdie machine.
But, as they say, that's golf...
SO LET'S SUM UP WHO WON WHAT:
Bryson DeChambeau was a sensational winner. And to find the green with a mighty blow from the wet grass and the mud at the par-5 18th in the first play-off hole to set up a birdie was a golf shot for the ages.
😍 We could watch this over and over again...

Shedding tears with his team after victory had been secured was pretty cool to watch. Bryson's no primma donna. He's just a great guy who interacts big-time with the fans.

John Rahm's brave fight before succumbing just proves what a class act he is.
The Crushers were winners. And the determined Southern Guards, although beaten by just one shot in the end, won a whole load of respect and admiration (Louis, Charl, Branden and Burmy, you guys still did us proud!)

HENNI: "Gents, I'm not sure if you're aware of this, but you were one of the most dominant teams, but with this win, this makes the winningest team on LIV. How does that feel?"

♥️ Today wasn't their day but they've done their nation proud 🇿🇦 #LIVGolfSouthAfrica pic.twitter.com/uFfktxDssQ
Immaculate Steyn City was a winner.
The raucous rendition of the National Anthem by the massive crown at the home hole was an unplanned but delightful late-in-the-day winner.
Bryson DeChambeau needed to get up and down to force a playoff at LIV Golf South Africa and he had to pause while the massive crowd broke into a loud chorus of the national anthem.

The Lion's Den was a winner.
Golf was a winner.
Dammit, LIV was a winner!
The tournament will be back at Steyn City in April 2027 and that's definitely another winner for the fans and South African golf.
