Willian Jose came close in the first half for Betis, while Rui Silva tipped a Martin Zubimendi effort against the post.
Ayoze Perez hit the post for Betis at the other end after controlling a fine ball by Isco.
La Real had a goal disallowed before halftime for offside against Mikel Oyarzabal and the forward hit the post with a free-kick after the break.
Earlier, winless bottom-of-the-table Almeria drew 0-0 with Real Mallorca.
