      TOP CONTENDERS

Scottie Scheffler, fresh off a Memorial win and having taken five of his last eight tournaments, is looking for his second major of the year.

World No 3 Rory McIlroy is approaching the 10-year anniversary of his last major triumph and looks to get off the schied. It was that summer McIlroy rattled off victories at The Open and the PGA Championship, but the 35-year-old has been shutout since.

Collin Morikawa seeks a third major championship of his own and a first US Open. A win at Pinehurst would represent the third leg of the career grand slam and set up an opportunity to join golf's most exclusive club next spring at Augusta National.

Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau and Viktor Hovland round out the notable names near the top of the odds board who are likely to play a role in this week's championship.

GARCIA GETS FIELD INVITE AS ALTERNATE

Sergio Garcia’s attempt to play in the 2024 national championship appeared to come up short last month after the Spaniard lost in a sudden-death playoff for one of the 11 spots in the USGA’s Dallas qualifier. However, the USGA announced its final six spots to round out this week’s field in Pinehurst and Garcia, as a first alternate, received entry into the competition.

      STRONG SA CONTINGENT

Four South Africans will tee it up at the third major golf tournament of the year.
