Kenya’s Lionesses face an uphill battle in trying to get out of Pool A when the Olympic tournament begins on July 29.
The Kenyans became Africa’s qualifier for the Olympics despite losing 15-14 to the Springbok Womens team in the African Cup when the South African Olympic committee Sascoc declined the invitation.
But they have a tough draw, and open against the Black Ferns, the reigning Sevens World Chamions while their other two opponents in Russia and Great Britain will push them hard in their quest to add to their solitary victory from the Rio Olympics.
Captain Philadelphia Orlando is one of three survivors from the squad that went to Rio, with the others being Sheila Chajira and Janet Okelo.
Keep an eye out for the likes of Stella Wafula, Christabel Lindo, Diana Awino and Vivian Akumu, all of whom have been highly rated and will finally get the chance to show their skills on a global stage.
In Rio, their only victory came in the 11th place play-off against Colombia, and the Lionesses will be hoping for a better result this time out.
