After a mid-season break, the Toyota Gazoo Racing South Africa GR Cup returns to action this weekend as the National Extreme Festival heads back to the Eastern Cape for Round 5 of the championship.
Originally scheduled to visit the iconic East London Grand Prix Circuit, the event will instead return to the familiar surroundings of Aldo Scribante Raceway in Gqeberha. While the venue may have changed, the spirit of South African motorsport has shone brighter than ever.
In a remarkable show of unity and sportsmanship, Algoa Motorsport Club and Border Motor Club have worked together to ensure one of the country's premier racing events continues uninterrupted. Even more encouraging is that proceeds generated throughout the weekend, including race entries, pit rentals and gate takings, will contribute towards the ongoing safety upgrades required at the East London Grand Prix Circuit, reinforcing a shared commitment to seeing national championship racing return to the Border region in the near future.
For Media Championship leader Nabil Abdool, the venue change comes with mixed emotions.
While a return to Aldo Scribante is one he welcomes with confidence, the SuperSport driver admits he was eagerly anticipating the challenge of East London's legendary Grand Prix Circuit.
"Like many of the drivers, I was really looking forward to racing at East London," said Abdool. "It's the fastest circuit in the country and one that demands absolute commitment. It's a true test of a driver's will, skill and courage”
"Naturally, it's disappointing and a little heart sore that we won't have that opportunity this year, but at the same time we're incredibly grateful that Aldo Scribante and the Algoa Motorsport Club were able to step in. Their willingness to host the event ensures the championship continues uninterrupted, and knowing that the proceeds will help support the upgrades at East London makes it a fantastic example of the motorsport community coming together."
Abdool will, however, return to a circuit where he produced arguably his most complete performance of the season.
It was here just six weeks ago that the SuperSport driver topped every practice session before claiming pole position with a new GR Cup lap record, converting that pace into two commanding lights-to-flag victories while also setting the fastest lap of the weekend. The result extended Abdool's championship advantage and maintained what has been a near-perfect campaign behind the wheel of his GR Corolla, affectionately known as Zeus.
"Aldo was incredibly good to us in Round 4, but it's been a long break and I'm really looking forward to getting back in the seat. I know the competition has been working hard behind the scenes, and are bringing some upgrades, so I'm expecting everyone to come out fighting. The goal is simply to execute another clean weekend, maximise every session and hopefully leave with another strong points haul”
Adding another fascinating subplot this weekend is the return of Devon Scott to the GR Cup paddock. Back behind the wheel of the GR Driving Academy Corolla, Scott resumes one of the season's most compelling rivalries. While the pair compete in separate classes, every opportunity they have shared the circuit this year has delivered closely matched lap times and fierce but respectful competition.
Their rivalry has become one of the defining stories of the 2026 season. Whether it has been chasing outright pace in qualifying, trading fastest laps, or simply pushing one another to find those final tenths of a second, the mutual respect between the two drivers has elevated the level of competition throughout the championship. As the season enters its decisive phase, fans can once again look forward to seeing the two Corollas battling for outright honours whenever they share the circuit.
With just three rounds remaining, every point now carries even greater significance as the battle for championship honours intensifies.
Abdool's closest challenger in the Media Challenge is News24's Craig Nicholson, who has shown tremendous pace throughout the season and will arrive back at Aldo Scribante with genuine ambitions of claiming the top step. Nicholson demonstrated just how competitive he can be during the previous visit to the circuit, securing second overall in the second heat and proving that he has the pace to challenge at the sharp end of the field.
"Craig is an incredibly talented driver and he's one of those guys who really applies himself to his craft," said Abdool. "He's very analytical in the way he approaches his racing, and I have no doubt he'll have spent the break looking at every possible way to close the gap. He showed at Aldo last time out that he has the pace, so I expect him to be right there again."
"I'm hoping the two Media guys can hold off Devon and the dealer squadron for a little while longer," he added with a smile. "It makes for a pretty interesting battle, and ultimately that's what we want. We want to be pushing each other and putting on a good show."
With three rounds remaining, the championship battle is entering its most important phase. The return to Aldo Scribante promises another exciting chapter, with each driver chasing their own piece of glory.
For Abdool and the SuperSport team, however, the objective remains unchanged. Keep the championship momentum rolling, maximise every opportunity and take another important step towards the 2026 Toyota Gazoo Racing South Africa GR Cup title.
The series goes Back to the Bay for another weekend of intense racing, fierce competition and the camaraderie that makes South African motorsport so special.
