Alvaro Bautista's second place in race 2 in Mandalika, Indonesia, was enough for him to secure Ducati's first title since 2011.
However, it would be that man Toprak Razgatlioglu that continued to dominate, scooping his third victory of the weekend with another superlative ride.
Jonathan Rea claimed the early race lead ahead of Razgatlioglu and Andrea Locatelli, with Bautista in fourth after a nervous opening lap. The Ducati rider needed to finish third or higher to seal the 2022 championship and he slid past Locatelli on lap four to put one hand on the trophy.
Meanwhile, Razgatlioglu took the lead off Rea on lap six and seconds later a mistake from the six-time champion on turn nine allowed Bautista to move into second.
But Bautista was not content to settle for second and a fantastic battle with Razgatlioglu developed, resulting in the lead changing hands several times mid-race. However, with a resurgent Rea closing the gap, Bautista then resigned to defend his position rather than pressuring Razgatlioglu.
"Today before [the Superpole race] I started to feel pressure," said Bautista after the race, as per motorsport.com.
"It was difficult to manage that situation. I knew I had more races, but it was the first match point I had in my hands, not depending on other riders.
"There was more pressure on me, so I just tried to not make any mistakes. I'm so happy, because even with the pressure of the championship, we were able to do a good job and win the championship."
Bautista has an unassailable 66-point lead over Razgatlioglu heading into the final round of the 2022 WSBK season at Phillip Island in Australia next week.
