A tour to the famous Studio 6 at MultiChoice City opened a world of possibilities for Paarl Gimnasium’s Mari Snyman in the broadcasting world.
The Western Cape school got an opportunity to spend a day at MultiChoice City where they got to learn about the different careers that MultiChoice, a CANAL+ company, has on offer. They also got to tour the famous Studio 6 to learn how a live show is produced.
Snyman is part of the Gim team that won the 2026 DStv Schools Netball Challenge (DSNC), powered by Bestmed Medical Scheme. As part of their prize, they won themselves a trip to the United Kingdom where they will not only get to sightsee but also compete in a series of friendly matches including a match against Loughborough University and England Under-18 side.
Snyman has a keen interest in broadcasting and has already started learning the ropes from her older brother, Jacques Snyman, who works in the Stormers media team as a videographer. The goal attack says being in studio was an incredible learning experience.
“Being in Studio 6 was an amazing experience. I never thought I would ever be there. I love seeing everything that is behind the scenes, behind the camera and seeing all the hard work that goes into it. A lot of people would just be watching on the TV and don’t really know what goes on off the screen.
"It was really cool, it blew my mind how fast everything happens and the reaction time of everybody. My brother is also a videographer. He started two years ago and currently shoots for the Stormers. I understand all the hard work that comes with working behind the scenes and the editing,” said Snyman.
The attacking player is looking to move to the UK to further her studies next year. Snyman is eyeing a place at the University of Bath’s Sport and Exercise Science BSc course, where she looks to continue playing netball as well.
Team Bath was one of the clubs that were not granted a license for the relaunch of the Netball Super League in which retired Spar Proteas Karla Pretorius and Phumza Maweni played for. Snyman said that, although the duo did not initially influence her decision to study at Bath, she is excited about the opportunity to play there.
“My goal is to come here for educational purposes and to play netball but getting a taste of it beforehand is lovely. I would love to study sports psychology, as I would like to give back to the community, the people that helped me with my netball career. I am currently in the process of sending my application. It is a long process,” she said.
