After sealing off the perfect international season, some Spar Proteas are headed off to their clubs for the 2026 domestic seasons.
South Africa sees a strong hold in the United Kingdom Netball Super League (NSL) this season. A total of eight players will compete in the second NSL2.0, including Kamogelo Maseko, Jamie Golob (nee van Wyk), and Sanmarie Visser, who will all be making their debuts.
Goal shooter Elmere van der Berg, who competed in the UK league for two seasons with Manchester Thunder, will be making her debut for the Adelaide Thunderbirds in Australia’s Suncorp Super Netball League (SSN).
Kamogelo Maseko - London Pulse
Coming off a high of a successful Spar Challenge series, Maseko joins the defending champions.
Maseko says she is excited about her new chapter but is aware that it will come with challenges.
“I am one person who limits my expectations because expectations come with disappointments. I am anticipating to adjust well. I have met quite a few of my teammates and they have been so welcoming. I think it will be challenging, just looking at how the UK league is not an easy league. It has quite a lot of phenomenal players even with the entry of Jamie and Sanmarie, which shows the competition of that league. It is also going to come as a challenge that I am ready for,” she says.
The goal attack understands that getting into the starting seven will require hard work and consistency.
“Confidence comes from preparation and I think I know why I was signed and one thing about the coach, she always gives me assurance and validation. It’s bringing in the talent, the hard work and. I think it is not about cracking the starting line-up but about being consistent in what I do, the starting lineup will come,” she explains.
Jamie Golob - London Mavericks
2025 Telkom Netball League Defender of the Season will be making her debut in the NSL.
“I am super excited. I think it is going to be good for my netball. I am going there to grow as a player. I played in the Telkom Netball League for six years and although I will miss it I think it will be good to get into a new environment and to challenge yourself. I am looking forward to playing against new opponents, the players in the league are more experienced internationally. The coaches, specifically mine Tamsin Greenway, has got a lot of experience having played for England, to have her coach me is super exciting to see where I am going to go as a goal and wing defence. But as Jamie, out of the netball environment, I am a little bit nervous. I just got married and obviously you want to be with your husband, but he is such a supportive partner. It will go by in a flash and it will be great,” says Golob.
Sanmarie Visser - Leeds Rhinos
Being named the Player of the Tournament at the recently-wrapped Spar Challenge against the England Roses, Visser will go into the NSL2.0 on a high. Her side finished as last year’s silver medallists in the inaugural Netball Super Cup and Visser says she is excited to be part of the Rhinos side.
“It’s going to be phenomenal playing in the UK league. I joined a team that is (seen as) underdogs and I am excited for what we are going to bring this year. The players that have signed are really exciting,” she says.
Khanyisa Chawane - Cardiff Dragons
The Proteas captain will be enjoying her third season with the Dragons.
Although she has enjoyed a lot of time on court, her side didn’t get the best results. The team finished last on the NSL table with only two wins to their name out of 14.
Nicola Smith - Manchester Thunder
Smith returns to the league in a clean bill of health after starting the season a bit later last year. The goalkeeper had suffered an injury last January while touring with the Proteas in Jamaica, and subsequently missed the entire pre-season, which forced her to go back to court with the league already in full swing.
Smith will be hoping her side will return to the Grand Final this season after losing to Pulse in the preliminary final of the competition last year.
Rolene Streukter - Nottingham Forest
Streukter will be hoping to continue from last season. The goal shooter had an impressive debut season with Forest. She picked up several accolades, including the Players' Player of the Season, Gilbert Top Scorer and Soft and Gentle Super Shooter in her debut year.
She was also named in the All-Star starting seven team of the season.
Ané Retief - Nottingham Forest
Retief will be making her first full season in the NSL2.0. She briefly played for Thunder last season as a temporary replacement for fellow South African, Smith, who was injured. Her short stint in Manchester was enough to entice Forest to sign her for the 2026 season.
Shadine van der Merwe - Loughborough Lightning
Van der Merwe will be hoping to head back to the top of the podium this season. Her side missed out on the champions' medal last year after losing to Pulse in the Grand Final of the competition.
She previously won gold with Thunder in 2022, and in 2024, she got silver with Thunder before joining Lightning.
Elmeré van der Berg- Adelaide Thunderbirds (SSN)
Van der Berg is having a complete change in her professional netball. She has already hit the ground running and she says she’s excited about what lies ahead.
“Since the moment I landed, I felt at home. It feels almost like South Africa, the beaches and sun. It is very nice. Everyone is so welcoming. We have a lot of team social stuff, we started training on the 5th of January and we had a solid three weeks with them. We will hit the ground running again on the 9th. I hope to get more variation in my game, to become stronger as and to be more versatile on goal attack and goal shooter,” she says.
