Vodacom Bulls Director of Rugby Jake White may well be back at Loftus Versfeld sooner than expected.

A spokesperson for the Bulls gave an update on Thursday that White was due to be released from hospital on Friday after White was rushed on Sunday to hospital and had to undergo an urgent medical procedure for a stomach ailment.

White was given off by the Bulls until 8 February, with his assistants taking charge of the team, but it seems he may well make a cameo appearance sooner rather than later if his doctors allow it.

“Jake is doing well. He has been moved out of ICU into a normal ward and he is his normal self again. He plans to be here on Saturday. He’d love to be here on Saturday, he feels that strong,” the spokesperson said.

White missed out on the Bulls game against the Dragons after being down ill with flu and stomach cramps the entire week in Wales and on returning to Pretoria saw his condition take a turn for the worse when the decision was taken to take him to hospital.

On Thursday, one of his assistants, Nollis Marais told media that the backline coach Chris Rossouw was the stand-in head coach in White’s absence.

“At the moment Chris is the stand-in, but we’ve all been working together for five competitions and everyone has their own role. It’s nothing new for us, we just make sure that everything runs smoothly but Chris is currently the stand-in for Jake,” Marais said.

The Bulls face a tough Heineken Champions’ Cup game against Exeter Chiefs - a side they lost 44-14 to in England in the first fixture and if they can turn the result around, they will qualify for the next playoff round of the Cup should they win and Lyon lose to Saracens this weekend with a game to spare.

The Bulls leave for France next weekend for their return game against Lyon after they beat the French side in their first encounter at Loftus Versfeld.
