Cavin Johnson will take charge of Kaizer Chiefs in his first Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates on Saturday, but does not have the best of record against the Buccaneers down the years.
It has been a tale of woe for Chiefs this season as they battle to find form, axing former coach Molefi Ntseki to place Johnson in the role.
The experienced coach has led Ajax Cape Town, Platinum Stars (two spells), SuperSport United, AmaZulu and Black Leopards down the years, coming up against Pirates on 18 occasions.
He has only won three of those though to go with eight draws and seven defeats, a lean return against an opponent that has inflicted plenty of pain down the years.
Johnson will hope the change that and mastermind a victory for the AmaKhosi, bring some joy to their fans against their most bitter of rivals.
We look back at the three occasions when he was successful against Pirates.
ORLANDO PIRATES 1-2 SUPERSPORT UNITED
League – January 18, 2014
While the 2014 African Nations Championship was being played in South Africa, several sides refused to release players, including SuperSport and Pirates. And so they met while the tournament was going on, with Johnson’s side coming away 2-1 winners as he recorded a first success against the Soweto giants. After a goalless first half they went 2-0 up thanks to goals from Mame Niang and Dino Ndlovu, before Happy Jele scored a last-minute consolation for Pirates. It was some revenge for Johnson after Pirates had knocked them out of the quarterfinals of the MTN8 on penalties.
SUPERSPORT UNITED 1-0 ORLANDO PIRATES
League – April 5, 2014
SuperSport were coming to the end of a patchy first season in charge for Johnson in which they eventually finished fifth, 11 points behind champions Mamelodi Sundowns. They did the double against Pirates thanks to a lone goal from striker Bradley Grobler, who has long been a thorn in the side of The Buccaneers down the years. It was a solid display from the home side that took them to fourth in the table.
PLATINUM STARS 2-1 ORLANDO PIRATES
League – May 2, 2016
Johnson returned to Platinum Stars for a second spell and led them to third in the table in 2015/16, boosted by a late season win over Pirates. Gift Sithole scored an early goal before Ndumiso Mabena, a former Buccaneer, doubled the advantage for Dikwena. Sifiso Myeni pulled one back for Pirates on 74 minutes but they could not find an equaliser as Johnson won the day.
