South African forward Aden McCarthy announced himself on the UEFA Champions League stage after scoring his first goal in the competition, although Azerbaijani champions Sabah fell to a 2-1 defeat against Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday.
The result marked the first-ever meeting between Sabah and Dortmund in the Champions League, with the German giants maintaining their perfect record against Azerbaijani opposition.
After Serhou Guirassy fired Dortmund ahead in the 10th minute from a Felix Nmecha assist, McCarthy provided the moment South African football fans were waiting for when he equalised six minutes before halftime.
The youngster finished off a move created by Puchaz to register his maiden Champions League goal on just his third appearance in the competition.
While Guirassy struck again in the 53rd minute to secure victory for Dortmund, the night belonged to McCarthy from a South African perspective.
McCarthy Joins Exclusive South African List
McCarthy became one of a small group of South Africans to score in the UEFA Champions League proper, following in the footsteps of players such as Benni McCarthy, Quinton Fortune, Steven Pienaar and Nasief Morris.
Benni McCarthy remains South Africa's most prolific Champions League goalscorer with eight goals in the competition, while Fortune and Pienaar scored twice each and Morris netted once for Panathinaikos.
The goal is another significant milestone for South African football, with relatively few players having found the net in Europe's premier club competition. Benni McCarthy remains the country's only UEFA Champions League winner, having lifted the trophy with Porto in 2004.
Guirassy Continues Dortmund Dominance
Dortmund's match-winner once again proved to be Guirassy, who scored twice to continue his remarkable Champions League form.
His opening strike arrived after just 9:51, making it Dortmund's fastest goal in this season's competition, before he completed his brace shortly after the restart from a Joey Veerman assist.
The Guinea international has now scored 21 Champions League goals for Dortmund, becoming only the second player in club history to reach the 20-goal mark in the competition after Marco Reus (24).
He also moved to 23 career Champions League goals and now has four goals in this season's tournament, the joint-highest tally in the competition so far.
Sabah's European Dream Continues
Despite the defeat, Sabah can take positives from yet another competitive display. The Azerbaijani side had won all five of their previous European home matches this season, scoring 14 goals and conceding only two before Dortmund's visit.
McCarthy's strike meant Sabah have now scored in two of their three Champions League matches this campaign, while the club's remarkable run of 24 European matches without a goalless draw remains intact.
The hosts also continued their unique Champions League story by becoming the first side in competition history to name a starting XI consisting of players from 11 different nationalities in three consecutive matches.
For Dortmund, the victory extended their perfect record against Azerbaijani clubs to five wins from five matches and ensured their run of Champions League away games featuring at least one goal stretched to 58 matches.
While the Bundesliga giants left with all three points, South African supporters will remember the evening as the night Aden McCarthy opened his UEFA Champions League account and etched his name into South African football history.
