English club Wasps have confirmed that experienced Emirates Lions centre Burger Odendaal has signed to play for them from next season.
The 28-year-old, who has captained both the Lions and his former team, the Vodacom Bulls, was apparently lured to Wasps at the recommendation of their attack coach, John Mitchell, who got to know Odendaal well during his stint as the Bulls’ director of rugby.
The loss of Odendaal will be keenly felt by the Lions, who reportedly have a couple of experienced players and also some more promising younger players negotiating with overseas clubs. It will also be a loss to the local game, as Odendaal played more than 100 games for the Bulls before moving to the Lions and was an influential player for both teams.
Odendaal’s departure was initially reported on in the weekend media but it was confirmed by Wasps on Tuesday.
“John Mitchell knows him well and recommended him after their time together at the Bulls.
“We were looking for a centre with great leadership qualities, as well as an outstanding competitor on the field and Burger ticks all of the boxes,” said Wasps head coach Lee Blackett in a press release on Tuesday.
“Burger will bring authority and a physical edge to our midfield next season.”
Odendaal confirmed the move and said he was excited.
“It’s an exciting time to join the Club, and I can’t wait to get stuck in and hopefully make an impact next season. Coventry Building Society Arena looks like a special place, and I can’t wait to play in front of the Wasps faithful,” said the strongly built centre.
