The Blitzboks will now face Olympic champions Fiji for the gold medal on Sunday night in an epic conclusion to three days of exceptional Sevens rugby.

A hat-trick to Angelo Davids - his third in as many days was enough for the Blitzboks to overturn an early setback of going behind and as has been their form in this entire competition, once again the Blitzboks kept their record of not conceding points in the second half of the game.

They were hit early when they conceded a penalty on their own 5m line and the Aussies immediately pounced, with Mark Nawaqanitawase scoring in the opposite corner.

It didn’t take the Blitzboks long though to retake the lead as a grubber through sat up perfectly for Davids, who scored his first of three tries in the game.

Australia hit back shortly afterwards with some excellent interplay through Matthew Gonzalez before Davids second try levelled matters on the stroke of halftime.

The second half was a textbook pressure period by the Blitzboks as they tightened the screws and didn’t allow Australia any space on attack, pinning them deep in their own 22 and spending large amounts of the half there as well.

Davids almost scored a third from a cross kick but it was his namesake Selvyn who went over to score and put his side in front before the winger Angelo scored his ninth try of the tournament to seal the match.

• Fiji scored a heart-stopping golden-point extra time 19-14 win over New Zealand in a pulsating match that would make them favourites for the title on form alone. Coming from 14-7 behind the South Sea magicians were in scintillating form as New Zealand’s discipline cost them and not even their desperation could save them from the flying Fijians in the end.

The South African Womens’ Sevens side will face Sri Lanka at 7pm (CAT, GMT+2) for the seventh/eighth place playoff in their competition.

The Blitzboks gold medal match against Fiji will kick off at 10.04pm and will be live on SuperSport.
