Argentina winger Carreras to join Bayonne in Top 14

Argentina winger Mateo Carreras, who scored three tries at the 2023 Rugby World Cup, will leave English side Newcastle at the end of the season to join Bayonne, the Top 14 club announced on Wednesday.

Carreras, 23, who has scored 16 tries in 37 appearances since joining the Falcons in 2020, has signed a two-year contract in the Basque country.

An under-20 and sevens international, the diminutive winger, who stands just 1.73m (five foot seven inches) has 17 caps for the full Pumas side.

He played six matches at the World Cup in France, scoring a hat-trick in the 39-27 group win over Japan which took the Pumas into the quarterfinals.

Bayonne are currently 11th in the Top 14 standings after six rounds.
