Boland Dames winger, Maceala Samboya, says she is humbled to have been called up to the Springbok Women’s Sevens squad for the HSBC SVNS 2 tournaments taking place in Uruguay and Brazil.
Samboya and Shanidiné Bezuidenhout are the two new additions to the 14-player squad travelling to South America for the tournaments to be played in Montevideo (21-22 March) and São Paulo (28-29 March).
“Hearing my name when the team was announced was a very special and humbling moment for me,” Samboya told SuperSport.
“Representing South Africa is always something I’m grateful for, and to now have the opportunity in the sevens format means a lot. Wearing the jersey of the South Africa Women’s Sevens Team is a big responsibility and honour, and I’m thankful for the trust the coaches have placed in me.”

The 26-year-old has previously represented the Springbok Women in the 15-a-side format, but she admits the transition to sevens requires significant adjustments, particularly when it comes to the pace of the game.
“The biggest adjustment moving into sevens is definitely the pace and the space on the field,” she explained.
“The game is very fast and every moment matters, so decision-making and fitness become even more important. I’m enjoying the challenge though, and I’m focused on learning as much as I can and contributing positively to the team environment.”
Samboya says her main goal for the tournament is to make the most of every opportunity and continue growing in the shorter format of the game.
“For this tournament, my goal is to give my best in every opportunity I get and to keep growing in the sevens format,” she said.
“As a team, we want to work hard for each other, play with pride and represent South Africa well in the competition. It’s an important tournament and we want to keep building as a team.”
She also had a message for young girls who dream of wearing the Springbok jersey one day.
“Believe in yourself and stay committed to your goals. There will be challenges along the way, but if you stay disciplined, work hard and keep your faith strong, anything is possible.
“Your journey might take time, but never stop believing in your dream.”
