The Springbok Sevens team surged into the lead in the HSBC World Sevens Series after adding the Vancouver Sevens crown to their season haul, putting them in prime position to win the Series in next weekend’s final tournament in New York.
The Blitzboks smashed upstarts Spain 38-12 in the final to move joint top with Fiji, who Spain shocked in the semifinals and set up the last tournament showdown in the Big Apple for the title.

Fiji’s crucial win over Australia in the third placed play off showed their consistency to be on the podium all season, but the Blitzboks had their third title win after Cape Town and Perth in five tournaments and in this current form must be favourites to take the series.
Rotating their team and bringing back a host of regulars, the input of playmakers such as Ronad Brown, Dewald Human and Selvyn Davids was more than apparent all weekend as they look to do the job in the final tournament and add another trophy to South Africa’s impressive Sevens trophy cabinet.
Team captain Impi Visser, who will play his 50th tournament next weekend in New York, was over the moon with the victory.
“It’s an amazing feeling,” he said of their win. “Sometimes we take it for granted but it’s an amazing feeling and we’re really grateful for it.
“We had a lot of changes —-six changes from Perth to now and the thing we said we want to build is consistency. I think we’ve shown that through and through. We just need to keep up this momentum going into New York.”
The final started off evenly squared but it was quickly apparent the Blitzboks’ defence and breakdown attack was going to be their ally. From the first penalty won, a quick tap sent it wide to the Perth player of the final Ryan Oosthuizen, who sprinted more than 50 metres to open the scoring.

A dropped ball by Spain in their own 22 was deadly, as the Blitzboks simply turned it over and spread it to the other end of the field where Sebastian Jobb had an easy run in for the second try.
The third try in the first half came from a deft grubber from Tristan Leyds behind the defence, where Shilton van Wyk first toed it on, and then collected to score try No 3.
Up 17-0 at the break, the Blitzboks continued their domination with a turnover penalty and quick tap five metres out from Spain’s line early in the second half, only for Van Wyk to add his second try to the mix.
Spain got on the board through a long range try to Jeremy Trevithick, matching his score in the pool match between the two sides but from the ensuing kickoff, Jobb took the ball, broke the tackle coming down and simply offloaded to a flying Gino Cupido to score under the posts.
Visser completed the rout and gave the Blitzboks time to catch their breath and lift the trophy, and the knowledge that if they come right next week again, they have a Series trophy in their hands.
